From the San Diego Zoo

"Gao Gao had his right testicle removed
Gao Gao underwent surgery to remove his right testicle, due to the presence of a tumor on May 6, 2014. The surgery, which took about an hour, went well, and the San Diego Zoo’s veterinarians are hopeful that Gao Gao will make a full recovery. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the surgery, we do not know if Gao Gao will continue to be part of the panda breeding population. In addition to the surgery, veterinarians took the opportunity to do an ultrasound to follow up on his previously diagnosed heart condition. We are awaiting a review by experts for results of the ultrasound.

The San Diego Zoo’ Panda Team had been observing Gao Gao and Bai Yun for signs of breeding behavior over the last month. No changes in Bai Yun’s estrous behavior were noted, and in the best interest of Gao Gao’s health, the decision to perform the surgery was made. Bai Yun has reached an age where it is likely she will no longer go through a breeding cycle, and the observations seen this spring are consistent with signs seen in other aging pandas.

The Ministry of Forestry for the People’s Republic of China has been fully informed regarding the status of Gao Gao’s health and gave approval for the surgery. Officials from San Diego Zoo Global and China are expected to discuss the future of the giant panda program in San Diego before the end of 2014. No changes in the panda population at the Zoo are currently expected."

From Zoo Atlanta Cub Confidential:

"All is well on Xi Lan and Po’s journey across the globe! They are set to arrive in Chengdu around 1:30 p.m. EST, May 14.

Zoo Atlanta’s Associate Veterinarian, Sam Rivera, DVM, and Kenn Harwood, Lead Keeper of Carnivores, are traveling with our giant panda brother and sister and have reported that they are doing just fine, doing all the things giant pandas love to do: eat and sleep. Did you know that they are traveling with over 300 pounds of bamboo?

Dr. Sam and Kenn will stay with Xi Lan Po and help them get settled in at the Chengdu Research Base. The Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding is a beautiful facility where Xi Lan and Po will flourish and get the opportunity to one day be giant panda parents!"

Xi Lan and Po arrived safely in China. From Cub Confidential:

"Xi Lan, Po, Dr. Sam Rivera and Lead Keeper of Carnivores Kenn Harwood all made it safely to Chengdu! Xi Lan and Po did great on their journey, eating and behaving well. They sent us a few photos from the early stages of their arrival:"

From Cub Confidential re Po and Xi Lan

Image
Po

"Rebecca Snyder, PhD, Curator of Mammals, received news on how Xi Lan and Po are adjusting at the Chengdu Research Base. She wanted to share this exclusive update with Cub Confidential:

“Xi Lan and Po are doing very well in their new home. Po has settled down. She is calmer now and eating more of the local cuisine, which includes the Research Base’s own biscuit recipe and different species of bamboo. Xi Lan was mostly unfazed by the whole experience and has continued to eat well and be his usual easygoing self. We are missing them, but we are also happy that they are entering an important new phase in their lives. I am already looking forward to next spring when I hope both of them will have the opportunity to meet potential mates.

We have received some questions about the Chengdu Research Base recently. One recurring question is if the Research Base has reintroduced any giant pandas to the wild. The Research Base staff has not done this, yet, but they are working toward it. A new facility has been built about an hour outside of Chengdu. Part of this facility houses giant pandas born at the Chengdu Research Base who will continue to be part of the captive breeding population. This part of the facility is open to the public. Another much larger part of the facility is not open to the public. The Research Base staff are planning to prepare young giant pandas for reintroduction there. The planning is underway, but there aren’t any giant pandas in this part of the facility, yet.”

Thanks, Rebecca! We can’t wait to hear news about Mei Lan, Xi Lan and Po potentially breeding!"
