Birds Galore. Something posted by Malvin
"We just received the response from Guinness for the world record breaking attempt for the feeder. We will be scheduling the recording setting event date in the next 3 to 4 weeks. When we have the event, we will fill the feeder completely. We will have folks from the media as well as official witnesses on site for the event. We'll post additional info as it develops."

Bai Yun *San Diego Zoo*

Image

http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/index.html

Info from the 8/3 blog ~Bai Yun continues to do what she has been doing well for several days: sleep, sleep, and lounge in the den.
Sometimes she naps out in her bedroom or sunroom area, but in the last 4 days she has spent at least 525 minutes [8.75 hours] of every 24 hours in her den.

As of this writing, the last ultrasound we obtained was on Friday. The fetus in her right horn was visualized, was noted to have grown considerably,
and all in all looked great.

Little lefty was again AWOL...

Info on LEFTY from the 7/21 blog ~Last week we saw a heartbeat from the cub in the left uterine horn. It looked smaller and less developed than its sibling.
Since that heartbeat sighting, we haven’t had a chance to see Left Cub. We have not seen its heartbeat stop or its placenta degrade as
Mei Sheng’s uterine roommate did in 2003. But staff is becoming increasingly suspicious that Left Cub will not survive the pregnancy.~

We are watching Bai Yun overnight and recording her denning activities all day long. The birth watch has, indeed, begun. And since we are
into August, we are expecting a birth soon.

Thanks Beth for posting the Panda Cam I'm really enjoying watching. I think Bai Yun was in labor she just couldn't find a comfy position to lie down. Thought she may have given birth but the last I checked she wasn't on the cam. Hope she's okay.

Blog update ...

Panda Cub Arrives! ( Thanks Carly for the news)

Posted at 10:37 am August 5, 2009 by Suzanne Hall
We have a new addition to our panda collection at the San Diego Zoo. At 4:58 this morning, Bai Yun gave birth to a vigorous, squawking infant! The staff here is elated and is, as always, in awe of Bai Yun and her perfect maternal skills.

She had appeared more restless than usual in the last 24 hours, resting for shorter periods with intermittent nest building through the day and night. At about 2:45 this morning, she was observed leaning back and holding her feet. Regular changes of position become common at this stage of labor, and contractions were evident as the time went by. Bai Yun handled it all well, and staff agreed that this seemed like one of her easiest labors.

At 4:58 a.m., Bai Yun stood up and had a series of contractions while on all fours. With the last one, we suddenly heard the loud squawking we had all been anticipating. As Bai Yun turned around to gather up the cub, we all got a glimpse at a wriggling infant on the floor, crying loudly for attention. Bai Yun immediately attended to her newest offspring and spent the next half hour or so soothing it, cradling it in her arms and licking it.

Over the next two hours, Bai Yun alternated between periods of cub care, cleaning herself, and rest. By the end of that period, we were already hearing short, 20-minute bouts of quiet from the cub, signifying the onset of resting periods. We aren’t able to confirm nursing at this point, because Bai Yun is doing a great job of covering her infant, but by the end of that two-hour period we believe there had been at least one bout of nursing. This we surmise because of indicators such as Bai Yun’s position and the cub’s location on her body.

Over the next 12 to 24 hours, we anticipate our new mother will settle into a routine of nursing, cub grooming, and resting. The regular bouts of panting will begin to diminish. If there is a twin to be born, it should happen soon, but we don’t believe there is a high degree of likelihood a second cub will be born at this point.

Congratulations to Bai Yun on another job well done!

Here is the new mom sleeping....

I looked up info on size of baby-little one ...

A panda cub is estimated to weigh 4 ounces or about the size of a stick of butter at birth.

Did you watch the video? How tiny it is! No wonder her labor wasn't too hard! Wish human babies were the same proportional size!

Panda Cub Update!

Repeat, and Repeat, and Repeat

Posted at 9:14 am August 6, 2009 by Suzanne Hall
As I write this, it’s nearly 11 p.m. on the day of birth of our new panda cub at the San Diego Zoo. Now almost 18 hours old, the cub is settling into a nice routine with Bai Yun, developing a pattern we have seen with our other cubs and one we expect will continue for some time: periods of quiet rest lasting 20 to 45 minutes, followed by presumed nursing sessions lasting about 10 minutes, followed by 5 or more minutes of grooming the cub; then repeat, and repeat again, and again.

This rhythmic pattern demonstrates to us that all is well in the den. Bai Yun has already hit her stride with this cub, demonstrating her maternal proficiency by managing this intense period of their lives together with aplomb. The periods of quiet rest signal to us that this cub is content and satisfied with the care it is receiving. And rest allows Bai Yun to avoid exhaustion, a factor implicated in the deaths of infants. Very fatigued panda mothers have been known to crush their newborns when exhaustion overcomes them.

We are thrilled to see that Bai Yun continues to be the mother we all know that she is: competent, gentle, patient. It makes our jobs easier. And we are gratified by all of your many warm well-wishes. Thanks for caring enough about our panda program to express your enthusiasm about what is happening here. And a very special thank you to those who indicated you were moved to donate in support of our program! Your generosity is very much appreciated.

Suzanne Hall is a senior research technician for the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research.
