After 100 days and 123,039 votes, the giant panda cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo received her name today.
The cub's name is: Bao Bao!

Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough, Ambassador Cui Tiankai from the People’s Republic of China and Assistant Secretary Kerri-Ann Jones from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs revealed her name at a ceremony celebrating the cub’s first 100 days of life.
Bao Bao translates as "treasure" or "precious" in English. It was one of five Mandarin Chinese names that were offered for a public online vote from November 5 to November 22. The names were contributed by People’s Republic of China ambassador to the U.S., Cui Tiankai, U.S. ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Gary Locke, and his family, giant panda keepers at the China Conservation and Research Center in Wolong, Sichuan, China, where the cub will live after she turns four years old, giant panda keepers at the National Zoo, and Friends of the National Zoo.

Bao Bao will make her public debut in January 2014.

Climbing Cubs!
Image

Image
How are Mei Lun and Mei Huan? Our giant panda keepers wanted to give Cub Confidential subscribers an update on what goes on behind PandaCam. Jennifer Andrew, Keeper I, has this weekend story:

“Late Sunday night, Mei Lun woke up from a lengthy nap to find that he was the only one awake. He walked around the den for a few minutes before climbing on top of his brother in the nest box. Mei Huan is usually more than willing to be woken up for playtime, but last night it seemed he needed a little extra persuading from Mei Lun. After several minutes of Mei Lun head-butting and crawling all over Mei Huan, he was finally able to wake up his cranky brother.

Mei Lun wasn't discouraged by all of Mei Huan's grumbling and groaning, though. He was very persistent about wanting some playtime. He tried play-biting Mei Huan and when that didn't work, Mei Lun sat on his head! After 10 minutes of nagging, Mei Huan finally obliged. He made sure Mei Lun knew how unhappy he was to be woken up and whined for the first few minutes of the play session, but then I think he got too wrapped up in tackling his brother to mind anymore! The cubs played for several minutes before Mei Lun got distracted by a piece of bamboo and climbed out of the nest box to conquer his new toy. Shortly after that Mei Huan decided to go back to sleep.”

Thanks, Jennifer. Mei Lun and Mei Huan are so playful! Heather Roberts, Keeper III, has also been noticing some cute cub behavior from our boys. She has this to share with Cub Confidential:

“Mei Lun and Mei Huan are starting to show some interest in climbing. Neither has climbed up anything yet (except over the den doorways), but they are starting to sit up on their hind legs while putting their front legs up on something. Giant pandas are expert climbers, and scrambling up a tree is the first instinct for a young panda at any sign of danger. Just like walking, the cubs will have to learn how to climb, but it won't take them long. Before we know it, they will be climbing up on everything!”

Thanks, Heather. We can’t wait to see them both climbing all over their exhibit. Lun Lun will be quite the busy mom!

Hammock Chillin'
Image

f you’ve been watching PandaCam, you might start thinking the cubs are getting stuck. No worries! The PandaCam camera is right above the scale, and in between the scale and the wall in Den 1, there’s a small gap. The panda nursery team put what is called wood wool in between the gap so the cubs wouldn’t get stuck in there when they were smaller. We’ve taken the wool out since Mei Lun and Mei Huan are big enough to maneuver themselves out of the gap. So no, our boys aren’t stuck or struggling; they are just practicing their climbing skills and having fun playing together!

Hammock time with Lun Lun is a panda cub rite of passage. There is nothing cuter than seeing Lun Lun climb in the hammock while holding a cub and then seeing her get into a comfy position to spend some quality cub time. Do you think there's enough room for two cubs?

I watched a similar scenario the other day where she finally scooped both of them up and put them deep in the bamboo forest!

Bao Bao Growing and Exploring
It's been a big week for Bao Bao! She got her name on Sunday, thanks to the more than 120,000 votes cast. She now weighs a whopping 12.76 pounds! Keepers have noticed her putting bamboo in her mouth in an exploratory sort of way, though she's not eating yet.

Mei is beginning to take her out of the den and into the large enclosure more frequently, even putting her up on the rockwork and allowing her to climb around on the lower level of the rockwork. The keepers have "baby-proofed" the panda enclosure by putting hay behind the rockwork to cushion any possible falls.

Like any human toddler, Bao Bao is still figuring out how to walk and move. The keepers noted her practicing walking quite a bit yesterday, and by this morning found her walking all over the place. It won't be long until she's a pro at all speeds and directions of panda locomotion!

Panda Updates
Friday, December 6
Wednesday we decided to take the wood wool out from behind the scale in Den 1. If you have followed previous panda cubs here at the Zoo, you may remember that this was a favorite hangout spot for the twins' older brother, Po. He spent a lot of his time behind the scale as a young cub until he grew too large to fit behind it anymore. Mei Lun and Mei Huan have also decided that it is a fantastic place to play, hide, and rest. They spent a lot of the day chasing each other around the scale, wrestling, and practicing their climbing skills!

When the cubs were younger and less mobile, we didn't want them getting back there because there was a chance that they wouldn't know how to get themselves out. This could have been very stressful for themselves and Lun Lun because she likely would not have been able to get them out either. Now that the cubs are mobile, they have proven that they are capable of navigating through their world, so we no longer have these concerns about the area behind the scale. From the view on PandaCam, this space looks awfully small, but in reality, the area behind the scale is perfectly sized for a "cubs only" playspace. There are sure to be lots of cute moments to watch in the coming weeks as the cubs continue to explore this area and learn how to climb on the scale!
