:15heartbeat: On the nest:M15

CROW will be removing the eaglets from the nest this afternoon for rehab, treatment and hopeful re-nesting as soon as possible. They did confirm a possible infection and worked with the local/national wildlife authorities for approval.

:15heartbeat: Chicks have already been removed from the nest. M15 was on duty and abandoned the nest at 13:37. At 13:38 you can see CROW in the bucket next to nest. They turned the cam off at 13:39, so actual retrieval not seen. Cam returned at 13:47 and M15 seen on branch and then eventually down to the empty nest. He stayed awhile, then up to a branch. Harriet not back yet as far as I know.

On the nest:M15
Crow quickly and successfully removed the Eaglets. M15 flew around the nest tree, came back and is looking around. Hopefully they can be treated and re-nested. We will provide updates as we know more.

:15heartbeat: They have panned for Harriet. M15 still on the branch occasionally looking down at the empty nest. I am glad they received permission to retrieve E17 and E18, but am wondering how they were able to as I thought the threshold was "caused by man"?

More vocals. 14:48, She continues to preen with vocals in between. 14:49, She is on attic branch looking down into nest with vocals at intervals. M15 remains on his branch. Then she continues to preen. 14:56, Vocals and preening continue with Harriet. M15 has been preening too. 15:09, Harriet vocal and M15 responds, then she alerts as does he.

I hope the problem can easily be resolved so 17 & 18 can get back to their parents. :15heartbeat:

:15heartbeat: From CROW FB:

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.
30 mins ·
As many of you know, we were granted permission from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to retrieve E17 and E18 from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam this afternoon to provide a veterinary check and treatment for their eyes.
Thanks to help from our friends at Joshua Tree, Inc we were able to remove them and transport them to our clinic on Sanibel. The eaglets have arrived to our clinic and the veterinarians will be examining them shortly.
We will provide these two eaglets with the best care possible and will post updates on here as they are available.

Photos from CROW:

Bucket truck with M15 flying overhead.

Retrieval of chicks.

Side view of E18 I think, in transport carrier through peek openings.

View of E17 and E18 in transport carrier.

Sue_Lyons (Admin): Here is an album of photos taken from the PTZ during the removal of E17 and E18. Thank you to the Pritchetts, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWC) and CROW for the quick response and care give to the eaglets:

Album description
On January 28, 2021 camera operators and viewers noticed the eyes of one of the eaglets (E18) appeared to be swollen. As the day progressed the problem worsened and was observed in both eyes. E17 also appeared to have the same issue in one eye. The camera owners shared camera photos with CROW that same day. On the morning of January 29, 2021, CROW contacted the camera owners to let them know they had received permission to remove the eaglets from the nest by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (FWC). At approximately 1:30 pm both eaglets (E17 and E18) were removed by CROW staff member and taken to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).

:1val: Things of interest from chat:

Jan 29, 12:25 PM
GinnyLWI: If CROW decides they can re-nest, they will try to return the eaglets as soon as possible. The adults should accept them and continue as though nothing happened. Fostering eaglets that have lost their parents to other pairs with eaglets is a common practice and very successful. So, returning eaglets to their own nest is even more successful.

Jan 29, 12:49 PM
Name removed of chatter: I though federal guidelines didn't approve removal for treatment unless it was caused by humans
Jan 29, 12:49 PM
purpleagle (Admin): XXXXX we sure hope that things are changing

Jan 29, 1:02 PM
Name removed of chatter: I don't understand -- I thought the rule was always no intervention. How did it get approved? Why is this different from "just being observors"?
Jan 29, 1:02 PM
purpleagle (Admin): XXXXXXX we don't really know why but are so glad--maybe things are changing

During chat, I noticed someone came in and said SWFL had said it was "Avian Pox" (mosquitoes or other biting insects transmit the disease usually and nodules form on un-feathered parts of bird in the "dry form" or the "wet form" causes necrotic, cheese-like lesions in mouth and upper respiratory tract) and I could not understand that as I had not seen anything of that nature posted. Then all throughout chat people were popping in and asking about Avian Pox, but some of the mods were pushing back on that. When I was through covering, I went to a different site and chat to catch up on other eagles and they were talking about Avian Pox, but the good thing is they ID'D the source as SWFL FB. No wonder people kept mentioning this, but I don't think this view is shared by all affiliated with this site. And here it is:

:15heartbeat: I wanted to view until Harriet finally went to the nest. She left the attic and went down to the nest at 16:21, but mod did not move cam for about a minute or so. When the cam went to nest, Harriet was checking out the fish there, then she ate. She finished eating at 16:41 and flew back up to the attic branch and feaked.

:7val: Update from CROW FB:

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. is asking for donations.
49 mins ·
Update on E17 & E18 from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam:
Our veterinarians have completed the exam on the two eaglets. Both of the eaglets eyes were crusty and partially closed, but they were reported to be well fed and otherwise in good shape. They were unable to determine an exact cause for their eye condition as of yet, but swabs were taken for testing.
After the eyes were cleaned, both eaglets received antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eyes drops. They were then transferred to our rehabilitation team and given a feeding. Their eyes will continue to be monitored for improvement as they receive more feeds. At this time, we do not have a timeline for their return to the nest, but hope to be able to do so as soon as possible.
We will continue to post further updates right here. We also want to thank everyone who has reached out with their kind words of support and donations! If you would like to donate to support CROW's mission and work to save wildlife, you can do so through this post or on our website (http://www.CROWClinic.org).

:6snowflake: Thanks for the updates SWINWK. I noticed the eye issue yesterday and one had white stuff on its beak. I thought they had pooed on each other. Glad they are in good hands. Hopefully, they will be OK and returned soon. I feel so bad for the adults. They don't understand and Harriet is already trying to mate again with M. She was footing him this evening.

:1val: YW, Nadia! I saw the white on their faces, 1 beak, heads yesterday too and thought the same thing. While I realize they have eye infections, I still think I saw poo. The bowl is deep, but seems tight to me and while I have only seen 2 PS's from them since hatched ... 1 made it over the bowl and 1 did not. I missed the "footing"! Hahaha! Right now they are perched very close together on the outer attic and can be seen on cam 1.

On the nest:None
6:45pm It was an eventful day. E17 and E18 are at CROW to be treated for eye issues. Hopefully they will recover quickly and be re-nested. H and M stay close, perched on the outer attic. 2 partial fish were delivered. Sleep safely Mom and Dad and Es.

:sum8: Nothing like taking the care to remove the name of chatters asking questions, then not removing the name as the responder mentions them by name before answering. Took care of that above.

I am not sure why you could not post this here, Shepherd. I will remove from Northeast Eagles thread.

Have they asked that their names be redacted?

Is footing part of mating?
