There is movement in egg 2 , saw it pulsating.
I always go with mods. They never post suppositions, just facts

does the blood on the shell concern you?

EGG 1 is such a mess, I am unsure chick will survive even if it gets out.

They say everything going nicely.
No, the blood does not concern me. Probably just from sac as it started hatching early. ( maybe because she’ll is thinner )
I don’t think she has had a brood before this. But of course, we will never know :girlcrazy:

I just know, I just go with nature. There are no set rules
Just when you think you have it figured out , you learn something new.

Egg 1 may not make it.

Well stayed up as late as I could.
One hatch and keeping heart in check for the other.
Will wait and see.

ASIDE

One of the SW FL mods is in osprey chat where i am.
They think the egg that hatched - hatched in its correct time.
They think the mashed eggshell got pierced, letting air in -
then was crushed - days before chick was to hatch.

So I rejoice our new pair will have one healthy baby! :newyear14:

On 12/29/23 observers noticed a “dimple” or slight indentation on one of the two eggs, a change on the egg’s surface that suggested a hatch may be in progress. It was soon confirmed (by the pattern of stains on the 2 eggs) that this was Egg #2, laid on 11/27/23 - NOT the first egg.

The eggshell had a crack and some splintering along the side. The outer shell membrane was visible between the bits of shell. The shell splintering continued.

NOT the FIRST TIME
The shell membrane is fused to the shell and holds the shell fragments together. It is fairly tough, so it can be difficult to break through.

The shell membrane is crucial to the embryo’s development. It is full of blood capillaries, by which it effects the exchange of oxygen from the outside and carbon dioxide from the inside through microscopic pores in the shell.

By the end of the day on 12/29 at SWFL, blood appeared on the shell and the membrane, which almost certainly came from the membrane’s capillaries. That raised some significant concerns about the health of the chick inside.

As difficult as this has been to watch, we can all be thankful that the first egg pipped on its normal timeline and hatched this morning.

I tend not to dwell on the past but look forward to the future of this family. M15, in his patience and determination and the ever protector . what an incredible male. And then the eloquent F23 who is learning and becoming into her own.

I observed Lady feeding her lone chick.
I am reasonably certain she has not been a mom before.

Yes, Ozzie & Harriet will care for the lil one lost.
I've seen far worse loss of young, not too disturbed by an egg.

This has been such a good nest with good pairs.
So glad both doing so well.
Wish they still called them Ozzie & Harriet.

Will try for more photos today but oh my goodness, M15 and F23 team feed. He actually gives F23 some to feed little one.
Very windy so they will have to vigilant covering youngster. Seems to be a storm brewing at all Glorida nests
