If this eggs don`t hatch, could there be a chance of them laying more this season? Has that ever happened before?

westend old bird...I never say never, so I'll say, I doubt it...I don't ever recall seeing an eagle reclutch..especially since they were incubating so long.

Wolf River, WI

Other than very strong winds and a very annoying stick, calm day at the nest. Thankfully, the eagles didn't make an appearance. (They were seen this morning in the area of the nest tree) However, if they are gonna come, I hope its very soon!! I would hate to see them arrive at hatching time or worse...If there are owlets in the nest, I'm not sure the GHO"s would give up without a fight...and I don't think they would win..

Still 1 egg...Wolf River has named them Bonnie and Clyde..

First time I have seen Clyde

Treat #1~scarfed down by hungry mom..

Treat #2~which mom didn't eat~hmmmmmmm

I've never seen them re-clutch after sitting for 5 weeks ... but the question is WHY did they lay so early to begin with. There would certainly be time for them to re-clutch. . . but I suppose their hormones don't work that way.

Eagle Cam for Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
We are watching the natural process of egg laying, incubation and nesting of American bald eagles. Birds are almost as individual as humans and we can only guess what will happen from day to day. Also, we don’t know for sure when the eggs were laid, and when incubation began. Even though the camera was in place on December 28th, we didn’t have streaming video until January 10th, when we saw three eggs in the nest. So, we do know that it should be 34-36 days from then. That means the eggs should hatch this week. We have no way of knowing whether the eggs are viable, this is the earliest recorded date for eagle egg-laying in Minnesota and the eggs may have gotten cold during this time. If they are not viable, we will not intervene.

Thanks for posting that info, KF about the MN eagles...I totally missed it when I was on the cam page..Grasping at straws here...if the eggs were not observed until Jan 10...it is entirely possible that the 3rd egg could have been laid on 1/9 or 10...if that is the case..its not time for a hatch!! I checked the 2012 calendar...there were quite a few 37-39 incubation days for a lot of the nest...Decorah actually had one hatch 39 days after lay...There's a huge difference between lay dates of 1/1 and 1/9 or 10...granted, we have no way of knowing...but, if we cross our fingers, then maybe there still is a chance for a hatch. If, let's say, the 3rd egg was laid on 1/9, then we are at day 35 for that egg!!!

...and here they are..Dad coming in!!

...and, I forgot to post this from yesterday...Dayton

Maybe when DNR made that original post they meant to say the 10th instead of the 1st. . . so looks like we can still have hope here!! I'm glad to hear that.

Dayton/Boonshoft Jim and Cindy update from Eastwood Eagle Watchers

We have an egg!!!

Well at least we might have an egg.

Yesterday Jim and Cindy were spending a lot of time hanging out at the aerie. Jim was busily working on the ongoing construction project while Cindy was uncharacteristically just watching. She wasn't even micromanaging every single stick-wiggling move that Jim made. Very strange indeed. He would bring in a stick, place it where he wanted it to be and fly off to get another stick. When he returned the first stick was just laying there undisturbed! And Cindy was right there in the nest! Unbelievable!

He continued this pattern as if enjoying his new-found authority and power until Cindy would fly off the nest. When she left, Jim dropped everything and followed after her like a little puppy. He apparently had something other than nest-construction on his mind.

We are unable to see the floor of the nest but we know that the first egg of last year was laid on February 15th. They have been seen mating frequently over the past several days and the eggs are laid 5 to 10 days after successfully mating. This morning Cindy appears to be exhibiting incubation behavior. Although this newly built nest features higher walls and a deeper floor than their previous nests and she is almost hidden from view when she sits in the center of it, we were able to witness some tell-tale signs. She is sitting quietly in the nest with her wingtips pointing upward at that 45 degree angle that is common during incubation as the egg would be nestled in the warm feathers of her lower chest. When she does stand, it is for less than a minute and she appears to be repositioning something with her beak. Then she sits back down into the same position by waddling on her knuckles as she slowly and carefully settles in over the egg. Eagles cup their talons up towards the soles of their feet when they are near the egg to protect it from being accidentally pierced. This early in the process, Cindy does most of the incubating and I have not seen Jim bring her any food yet nor have I seen him take a turn incubating while she feeds, but the day is young.

If their first egg of the 2013 nesting season was laid last night it should hatch around 35 days from now, which would be about the 20th of March, and the eaglet should fledge sometime between May 29th and June 20th. Additional eggs may be laid over the next several days, a day or two apart. Since Jim and Cindy have proved themselves to be quite efficient in this endeavor, fledging two eaglets in 2011 and three more in 2012, I am expecting more eggs soon.

I have not seen any of the 2012 juveniles lately and that may mean that Jim has shooed them away with the beginning of the new nesting season.

Our partners at the Boonshoft Museum should reactivate the eagle-cam stream today. These two, pole-mounted video cameras will enable us all to watch the eagles come and go at the nest. Camera 1 is focused on the south side of the aerie and Camera 2 is aimed at the west side which seems to serve as their front door. The nest may appear empty at times but you can be sure that there will always be an incubating adult inside, just below the rim of the nest, and another adult standing guard nearby when it is not hunting. This guarding adult will aggressively defend the area from any possible threat especially other eagles, Great Horned Owls and other birds of prey.

Let the 2013 nesting season begin and may the summer skies of Dayton, Ohio be blessed with the matchless beauty of young Bald Eagles on wing

well, let us hope there will be a hatch and remember the year at Shepherdstown. She was incubating eggs in that horrible storm and a few days into storm she laid another , which if I remember rightly, it would have been 4.I stayed up for several nights watching and taking shots.

Who knows. Nature is mysterious

I certainly hope that is true...I wonder when that pic was taken...I've got about 10 egg pics, with nothing suspicious showing on any of them...What I have noticed is that they really aren't rolling them any more...which could be a good sign..they don't need to roll close to hatch...the only rolling they are getting is when one of them pulls them under them...so, I hope they are hearing something coming from at least one of the eggs.

They both have been very fidgety..but no staring or listening like you see as eggs are pipping...I may have had other cams up today, but this one has been up the entire day!!!

Losing the light now, so I still have my fingers crossed that there is at least 1 hatch!!!
