The camera is online – the first day today, although the current conditions are not inviting: cold and recent snow. The river is ice-free though. The birds have not been seen yet.

Do they build their own nest? I guess I just assumed people filled the nest first with some branches....

Yes Matrix, the osprey build their own nest. If people left the previous year's branches, or brought new ones, the nest would be settled by Canada geese. They return typically earlier than osprey, but they are not able to carry branches in their beaks. They sometimes visit osprey's nests before their "right owners" arrive and are disappointed that such great location is not usable for them.
