Geez. Update #2!!!

Nest updates
June 20

More rescues! Fish and Game has come to the aid so far of three of the four chicks and taken them to the roof of the building on which the nest box is located. On Tuesday evening, building staff alerted Fish and Game about a chick on the ground about the same time that a strong wind and dust storm swept through the area. The male was taken up to the roof to join his brother, which had been placed there earlier that morning.

On Wednesday morning, a chick was spotted in the building’s parking lot and Fish and Game was once again called to the scene. This time, it was a female. There was blustery wind and rain in the morning, so perhaps weather was again a factor. Or maybe she was just anxious to try her wings. Meantime, the adults are flying and vocalizing loudly overhead, keeping a sharp eye on all the activity.

Update from cam site.

June 26

Fish and Game rescued one of the male chicks today after it became stuck behind a structure on the roof of the Banner Bank building, located two blocks north of the nest box. Thanks goes to the maintenance man who regularly checks the roof after a fledgling got caught in that same spot a couple of years ago. The chick was returned to the roof of One Capital Center after being fitted with a band, so now all of them have an identification number. The count is now official: three males, one female.

It appears that all four chicks have fledged, Fish and Game reports. Observers have seen the juveniles flying around One Capital Center and elsewhere in downtown Boise. The parents will continue to feed them for several weeks until the young are proficient at flying and hunting and can survive on their own.

Sad news on one of four peregrine falcon chicks downtown has died

June 28, 2013 2:07 p.m.

There’s some sad news on the peregrine falcon front downtown: One of the four fledglings, all of whom had successfully fledged and were trying their wings and learning hunting skills in downtown Boise, has died after crashing into a window. Idaho Fish & Game reported today that the juvenile female died this morning; three males remain. “Our Fish and Game Department has been doing an incredible job following up on the falcons this year,” the Peregrine Fund reported. “After rescuing all four of the fledglings and banding them, it is unfortunate that they also had to report on the first mortality.”

Young peregrine falcons face steep odds, the fund said, with more than 50 percent of young peregrines, and raptors in general, not surviving their first season in the wild. After that first season, the mortality rate drops to about 12 percent.

A pair of peregrines laid four eggs in a nesting box atop One Capitol Center in downtown Boise this spring; the first three eggs hatched May 12, and the fourth the next day. Between June 17 and June 20, three of the chicks were rescued by Idaho Fish & Game after being blown off the building ledge by strong winds; another, one of the males, was rescued on Wednesday after it became stuck behind a structure on the roof of the Banner Bank building, two blocks north of its nest. All the chicks were banded for identification.

The Peregrine Fund and Idaho Fish & Game maintain a “Falcon Cam” where people can watch the peregrine family in its nest; on June 24, after all four chicks had moved out of camera range, it replaced the live feed with a photo gallery

Peter was in new Brunswick for a week and got home Wed evening. To his surprise while going for a walk he heard a falocn. He looked for it and saw it perched on a high building and then saw a nest box and then another falocn lower down, either defeathering or feeding.
He was excited to be somewhere else and be able to pick out a falcon , especially since we did not know they had one

Sorry to learn about the loss of the little female. Just when you think they are on their way, tragedy strikes. :sorrow:
I sure am glad that one guy checked the roof and found that poor little juvie that was stuck.

bev, more falcons. :loveshow:

That's funny that Peter recognized the falcon call. A couple of years ago we and some friends were down at the dam and we heard birds. The 'know it all' in the group said 'that's a something, something sandpiper. I was like, it sounds like an osprey to me. About that time, she came swooping by, and giving us a warning call, a very big osprey.
