Well, I couldn't help myself...I emailed Alcoa..like I do every August. I sure hope they have made some accommodations for Ava and Havoc this year..If I were A & H...I would move elsewhere, I think... :teehee:

I emailed them too ... just a couple weeks ago. Was surprised when I just got an email back.

Dear Patti,

thank you for your email.
it looks like Ava is going to attempt to nest on the coal bunker as she did in 2010 and 2011.
i haven't been able to spot any eggs yet but i'm hoping to rig up a camera to take a happy snap next week to post to www.alcoa.com/falcons

thank you again for your interest.

I miss the tower location, but at least we know Ava is still around. Thanks Patti!

Thanks, Patti. Those days that Alcoa had a nestbox that peregrines would use & a cam to watch were great days. I miss those days as I'm sure many others do...

Well, what do you know..they actually updated their website...what I don't understand is why won't they just MOVE THE BOX!!! grrrrrrrrrrrr....

    Tuesday 17 September, 2013
Welcome back! The 2013 Peregrine falcon breeding season at Alcoa Anglesea is underway.

The nest box for Havoc and Ava remains vacant. Instead Ava has elected to return to the coal bunker ledge of the previous nesting attempts of 2010 and 2011.

We have an egg! Actually, we have two!! The eggs are rarely left uncovered during incubation but Ava kindly gave us a sneak peek while she stretched her legs (and wings).

I said that earlier.....and I agree...I just don't understand these people!!!

I'm gonna try and think of this as a "cliff" nest. Rocks are equally cold and hard...so, fingers crossed!!!

I'm confident that there is a little chance for a success...
Has Ava any other choice if she and her mate are addicted to this place?
Trial and error is a fundamental principle in natural sciences.
Let's wait and see. It is a matter of falcons live, not of ours.

And we know from the past 2 years that she's had trouble here .. the eggs have rolled around, etc. The moved the box because the Falcons were diving at the workers. So know she's up on a coal bunker(?) I would think they could and/or would at least put some kind of make-shift "box" up there for her ... or ... put something to deter her from using it.

And alas, as we have learned ... they never listen to us.

And I really miss our late nights watching this cam ... for hours ... with a 15 second refresh .. seeing who would post the pic first!! :laugh2 Those were the days!

Oh how I miss the nights also, but half the time I can't stay up past 4:30 anymore. :teehee:

I said that earlier.....and I agree...I just don't understand these people!!!

On a cliff though, there would be some sand (dirt), twigs, grass, etc.. something to keep the eggs from touching the rock directly and to keep the eggs from rolling off. In the wild the absence of any substrate also produces nest failures. From what I've read in my research anyway.

Not necessarily!!! Hey...I'm grasping at straws here...don't burst my bubble!!! :teehee:

Seriously, I just don't understand why these people won't put the box where they know they will show up!!! This is just ridiculous. The least they could do would be to dump some pea gravel up there. It would be better than nothing!!

Good luck with your email, Bev...I've already sent one (as I know many of you have) and I'm ready to send another one...that won't be as tactful as my last one.

I reminded them that they sent someone ,here, to Alberta, to research the peregrines . I reminded them about Genesse , which is a similar site.
I also mentioned that Sheila was not around anymore. I suggested putting an open box with pea gravel , where the eggs are.
And I also suggested where to put a new nest box(Not there :teehee: :teehee: ) and I suggested they contact Genesse to see how their operation works

We wil see what they say, or they will ignore me

Thanks so much, Bev....

Ya know, the first year (I think) that Quest laid at Don Mills, they went to the ledge, picked up the eggs, put down the nest tray with pea gravel, crossed their fingers, and watched her return and continue with incubation...so, it can be done...

I sure hope they take your suggestions!!!

As a continuation of SGB's post about Quest's nest, at Maine they built a well-designed box that would hold a decent amount of gravel & replaced the "bad" box with the "good" one after eggs were laid, so Alcoa could do something if they wanted to. I too am surprised that they updated their website when they don't seem to be interested in this pair being able to raise young.

Thanks everybody for all of the updates & emails you've sent!

So Kitten--you can only stay up until 4:30 now, huh?
:laugh2

At the very least, they could throw some gravel up there. I cannot write to them again after my last message last year. Well, I didn't threaten to blow up the facility or anything like that but it was pretty harsh. They don't care.
:furious:

I do wish that poor little Ava could have chicks. I still remember how fond she was of the old nest when she first arrived and then they went and took it away, never giving her a chance. :girlsad3:
