FC just brought a tiny piece of prey to the box, left it, and she pretty much ignored it. I took lots of pictures of the feeding but didn't get a single one of the dragging. I was too horrified and I've got to let my nerves settle down first.

Jody, one of the moderators just posted:

Your right BIG breakfast. Pretty much like last nights dinner.

I think that chick was balanced on the raw prey and got it's wing bloody, no reason for concern,, there isn't anyway they can get hurt to cause an injury, while still in the box, just eating ;)

Your observation of Clara pulling them from the corner was right on, I don't believe she wants them stashed in the corner with the prey, and would prefer to have them in the more open area... She sure tried to corral them away from that corner ;)

Just saw her pull that one out...

I've never seen this before.

Does she sense one of the babies is ill or something? Or is it a bloody wing that's bothering her?

I've never seen this either. I'm not even sure it's the same chick.

I can't get this cam at work but there may be an intruder in the area? Back in 2009 in Maine, there was an intruder falcon in the area and the female grabbed the lone chick by the cheek to haul him into the box and to us on cam it looked like she was attacking it as we couldn't see what was going on outside.

I'll try to get a picture.

Could very well be. Something is really bothering her.

The prey is stashed in corner. Kids are snuggled up to it. Clara trying to get them under her. They are still in box, but mobile.

It's not too cold out this morning.

This is weird.

She pulled one by the wing and tried to brood it. It broke away and ran back to corner on top of siblings and prey. She pulled another one by its beak? It got away and moved back to corner...

I don't think it is because I didn't see any blood on the one she pulled by wing. Then, the one she pulled by beak didn't look injured...

I think she doesn't want them on the prey?

But then, why not move the prey?

She's looking out. Maybe she is seeing something or sensing something. Her "defensiveness" with FC was strange.

Are we sure that was just FC who came in with the small bit of food? Could it be another male... EC or different? Could that account for her behavior? I'm at a loss here.. Just thinking out loud.

Ljames - did it seem like the feeding was over, or did it seem to get interrupted?

Yes, I saw the beak pulling too but had already blanked that out.

It's possible it was another male, didn't get that good a look.

I have a feeling that Carly is right about what's going on. She's trying to get the chicks under her or at least close together so she can protect them. She probably chased FC away telling him to go chase away whatever has her upset.

Another moderator, Paula just posted to Yahoo group:

I don't think there is reason for concern at this point. I seem recall something similar in the past and it was fine. Sometimes what we think we see really isn't a problem/issue - just a momentary thing. That breakfast was HUGE. Clara seemed to struggle with it from the ledge to the box and even after the feeding. After the feeding was over and Clara trying her best to shelter her babies Fernando came in with a small offering that was rejected and left laying in the scrape. Makes me think that it was Clara that hunted and brought in the large prey that she fed the eyasses.

Seems that there is plenty of food around the ledge area to feed the kids a few times today!

The feeding was over. She actually ate a good bit at the end in the box. One chick had already gone to the corner to sleep when she started cramming that prey up against the chick. The camera then showed the other end of the ledge at the low wall where a big prey still remained.

Ok here's a picture of the chicks, the prey, and the hurt looking wing.

Sounds stupid, but I wonder if it got sunburnt.

We had REALLY warm temps the last few days - like 89 in San Jose on the 10th. 70's yesterday. Today is much cooler - 49 out there now. If they are just starting to get their 2nd down (12 days old today, I think. Wasn't 1st hatch 3/31?), could it be the little one had it's wing positioned weird when laying and got burned?

This reminds me of Orion in Rochester last year when it was so hot, he was born and looked like he had no down. At first, I was afraid it was going to be like Phoenix from Kathy Q & the kids in Richmond. Didn't they get mites and looked like they lost all their down?

Again, just thinking out loud. Hope it's nothing, but others obviously saw it.

The feeding, stashing it away (one chick already in the corner) and the zoom on the wing.

I'm sorry that I couldn't get any of the dragging shots , I was just to mortified.

Well, they are being fed again right now but I didn't see how that came about. They were pretty full already, but they are eating nevertheless.

Looking at the photo ljames just posted of the size of that prey and the red bloody part explosed...makes sense what the moderator said about him/her leaning on it or maybe he stumbled put out his wing and got the stain underneath. Remember little Orion last year when DC fed him and kept missing..his face was full of blood! He was red for a few days on account of it.

I do... Daddy was trying his best to feed him that day!

:hahah

Another feeding going on and all seem interested. I think if there was a serious injury, the little one would not want to get up. But that's just my thinking.

There aren't enough rolls on them yet! They need to look like little Michelin babies!

My cam's freezing up for whatever reason - probably too many open.

Clara's out of the box and seems a little calmer now. Kids are alone & back to snuggling with their new prey pillow!

Well I'm going to rest easier. I do remember seeing a mother falcon aggressively gather her chicks to protect them, but not quite like what I saw today. I swear, at first I thought that she was trying to kill and eat it. :nailbite:
