Thank goodness! After following the twitter feed today, I was really worried this was going to be big trouble.

Carly, how many eyases did Jack have at one time? Did he feed them all? Just curious if P and B have eggs and how many, can he provide for both. He had a hard time feeding just 1 last year! :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: :egghatch: LOL

(MAK): Donna reports DC swooped on B once at NB

(MAK): DC just flew down and swooped once-not sure where he went

(MAK): At BS-heard loud echupping in scrape. P flew out then went back to scrape, more echupping and flew back out again.

(MAK): I came around the corner to find P on the SW corner of the W extension-DC came in and they mated, then he flew N

(MAK): DC went to NW corner N of scrape-P is whining on SW corner-they can see each other

MAKfalcon (MAK): They both took off,one went to window scrape echupping then took off and they met in the cubby-echupping for many minutes.

(MAK): DC flew off to the N and landed in on the N side roof where I only saw the tips of wings-looked like mating was taking place.

(MAK): DC then flew N and I have found P on the NW corner out from window scrape-she is looking N. I'm going back DT

(MAK): DC is under the SE wing as I approach TSB

(MAK): B flew to Wilder SW corner and DC flew over-they mated, both flying out of view

(MAK): B & DC flew past the NB,he went to money bag of Mercury, she flew by him-he followed and they went N out of view

MAKfalcon (MAK): DC is chasing B all over the place diving on her here and there

Jack has had up to 6 eyases per year the past 3 years that he's been running two sites and his challenge here has also been the weather at times but he manages quite well He considers both territories as 'one' territory so food is shared between sites. He will catch food at our site and take over to TR Mom and vice versa - when he sees an opportunity to get food he grabs it. The females also start hunting once the kids pass the 10 day mark

I seem to remember DC doing just fine hunting and feeding for Orion. Don't forget it was late in the season and extremely hot so the circumstances were trying for both adults and junior at that time. DC is an exceptional hunter like his dad and I don't think any of us have ever seen a young tiercel so intent on feeding his offspring as he was with Orion.

It's not fair to compare DC to his dad because Jack is 11 years old and had 7 years lived before he took over a second site. Their situations are very different in many ways and the lack of trust between him and Beauty will I think prove the bigger challenge than food will, as it did last year

Don't forget their instinct is to reproduce and they will do everything to ensure the survival of those offspring, even die for them if they have to. At the end of the day for them it's all about passing on their genes and they will rise to the challenge. It doesn't mean they won't make mistakes along the way but they will learn from those mistakes as well.

Good info Carly, thanks but I was talking to MAK about DC's hunting skills last night and she can't even remember DC hunting or catching any food for Orion last year. I know he brought morsels to Orion, I think most were cached food from B. Once, I saw him bring in a freshie, that's when he got it all over Orion's head. He is still begging from Pigott and stealing her food. Just curious about his skills. Hmm, interesting. That's why I asked if he could feed a bunch more! He will learn to!

But I thought they don't have feelings and forget what just happened? I'm so confused. I think someone needs to re-write the book on falcon behavior. We have seen a whole new chapter right in Rochester. LOL

Ok, thanks Carly, each day brings something new!

Interesting perspective Donna.

I was thinking DC may be doing hunting during his trips back and forth between BS & DT or when he's out of the watcher's view for longer periods of time when they've got eyes on B, and he arrives on scene. I thought maybe he would cache the food and B would find it in some of her cache spots. We know based on MAK's reports, Beauty is a good morning hunter - at least it seems that's when she does a lot of her hunting. Right now, it seems like he's spending lots of time on TSB and Mercury, and just trying to work our the courtship situation with both girls. At this point, the girls are still able to care for themselves.

I thought there were times last year when he arrived with prey to the box area during courtship/incubation (I think on the side platform, several times on the top of cam 4 and next to main cam). I thought those deliveries looked fresh (not plucked or half eaten).

After hatch, I think we would expect that the prey would be cleaned - which may appear to us to be partially consumed and not really "fresh" per se. He may have taken some for himself during the cleaning - I see that happen at many nests with cams that can view outside of the nest area.

Will have to watch that a little more this year.

It isn't 'feelings', it's purely territorial. He rules the territory and she rules the nest box - he's worried about losing his territory to another male. He feels a threat to his territory.

The human analogy was used simply as a method of understanding, humans are more concerned about feelings and losing 'said partner' than 'property' whereas for them keeping the 'territory' is number one priority.

It's why when a mate dies, the other finds a replacment as quickly as possible if another candidate is available. It helps them keep the territory when there are two, but if it was feelings - then the surviving mate would leave and go off somewhere but he/she doesn't and does what they have to in order to hold the territory.

Make sense?

Yeah, kinda sorta! LOL Thanks! :)

I've always heard that the territory, & therefore the nestbox, belongs to the tiercel. I've also heard that the tiercel has to court the falcon each year before nesting season to see if she will accept him. So I've wondered what would happen if the falcon didn't accept the tiercel one year. Would she just leave the territory & find a tiercel that she is more impressed with? I guess I'm seeing the answer to this here.

funny on all the theories. We were told that the territory, belongs to the remaining falocn of the pair.
Like right now U of A belongs to Radisson, after the loss of DAmon.
but so many theories, only the falcons know for sure :girlcrazy: :girlcrazy: :girlcrazy:

all that we once knew in the past is changing with a new breed o f falocns

I personally believe - after watching on site and watching cams for years - that they bind to the site first then to the mate. Hence the reason they take a new mate so easily when one perishes or vanishes, to me that is more logical.

That's what Froona said, that its actually the territory/site that they bond to more than each other. She is also the first one who I know of who said the territory belongs to the male. I was just getting into falcons when we lost her or I would probably have asked her my question. However, she also said that if a female doesn't want a male (usually because there have been several years of infertile eggs, etc.) she either runs him out of the territory, or leaves & finds a tiercel in another territory.

Edit: Should mention that after my initial post, I went to "Froona's Corner" & that's where I found the info about the falcon running the tiercel out of the territory or leaving.

To my recollection of DC last year-I don't have memory of him doing much hunting. I think the few times he was seen on camera with prey doesn't prove that he caught it and brought it to Orion. I know for a fact that he is stealing Beautys' cached food this year and taking it over to Brighton whether it be for himself to eat or to share with Pigott I can't say for sure. Carol and Kathy witnessed a tug of war between them. I do question his ability to provide for 2 sites. Time will tell as they say.
