thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Matrix and Cheryl, and your words of wisdom from experience, Bev. It is so easy to get attached to these birds, especially when you watch them day in and day out. We all know there is a high mortality rate during the first year, but it doesn't make it any easier to take when one is lost. Its even harder (for me) to accept when one dies after weeks of flying so well. You think they are "out of the woods", but they aren't. With each stage of "training" comes a new set of obstacles that must be mastered. Knowing HOW something occurred really brings closure. I still think about Apollo's death in Columbus several years ago and wonder if he could have been saved IF somebody had seen what happened, gotten to him, and pulled him out of that fountain. Probably not, but we'll never know.

Seeing the adults at all of these nests certainly makes me appreciate what they overcame during their first year to survive, establish a territory, and raise a family.

..Chris Saladin posted this on her C&Cs facebook page, about Sketch's death.

C&C's Ohio Peregrine Page Updated info. about Sketch: Talked to Laurie, and Sketch was reportedly found in the center section of Market Street near the trees with a decapitated and plucked pigeon in his grasp. This would suggest that either Sketch came down following an aerial food exchange (juvies are often chased and challenged for their prey by siblings following exchanges, and we’ve seen them interlocked by trying to pull prey away from one another in flight) or he could have tried to fly with food from one of the buildings and lost altitude and collided with some obstacle. Laurie said that the only notable sign of injury was that he had blood in his mouth (so, his death was likely due to a head injury). Once again, this is sad, but at least he died engaging in the activities that make a peregrine a peregrine. Thanks to the person from the PD who found him and reported about him. As we mentioned, it is impressive how all of Canton has embraced and rallied around their peregrines, in spite of this year’s difficulties!

Tsusan...thanks so much for sharing that information from Chris. It certainly does provide a lot more insight into what could have happened. A pigeon certainly is a heavy package to carry for a young male peregrine just learning to maneuver. Bless his heart. Chris is right, as sad as it is, at least he died being a peregrine.

I think we had a similar incident with a fledgling (can't remember where) this year. I think he/she had just received a pigeon transfer, lost altitude, misjudged the landing and unfortunately perished in the crash. :cryinggirl:

You're right SGB, it was in San Jose...Orion. Same type of circumstances. After a food exchange from parent, he collided with a building when trying to make a landing.

I managed to get the pics of the second adult I saw last evening up on the Canton Peregrine's Facebook...

Twice now I've been bumped on the Canton FB page when doing the report and uploading the other pics...so I will post a couple here until I get my personal facebook page ready for my reports and pics...

Poor Sketch...he was smaller than the others...Pigeons are/were heavier than him...Any male for that matter...

The Lighter of the two boys coming in shortly before I left....

Mirror image of the Huntington Building in the PD Building...Light reflecting from Huntington shining on the PD...The sun is actually behind the building pictured...Very confusing as the reflection is on the east side of the building and it is around 8pm in this pic...this side of the building SHOULD BE Dark at this time of evening!!...

Thanks for the pictures, Matrix - they really show what our fledglings are up against. I have a question to throw out - Canton has had a nest here for a long time. Why so much trouble This Year? Because they are all boys? Any thoughts?

Good question~~! and one I've been wondering too... as a piece of a bigger picture!!!

Something is keeping them downtown this year...

At this time, last year, Mystic had taken the fab four down by the 30/77 interchange and downtown was quiet....

Ended up finally getting the pics up on Cantons Falcons Facebook.....

As I recall, Mo wasn't much help to Mystic last year. He was so young, and didn't "get" that the juvies needed to be taught survival skills. Mystic did most of the training. After I asked the question last night, I was thinking how Mo liked to hang out by the interchange, and the park area... So maybe Mystic thought the kids would be safer staying "in town"?

Yeah Susan...once Peenie, Atticus and Bravery got to flying real good, and the much bigger Lula came after him in flight...he sorta disappeared...
Bev,...
He did not like to share his food with Mystic...let alone four others!!!! LOL.. He knew he was supposed to but being barely a year old....Self preservation had it's grip hard on him still...He did give Mystic food...but she... most of the time, had to go after him for it...

THAT Could Be why he bolts.. when he sees her coming while he is incubating!!!!! :teehee:

Even though he was still in his own juvie plumage...he had begun to show white on his chest and you could se immediately if it was hime....I think the next time we saw him was this year! In full Adult plumage! LOL..

thanks for answering my question.
that is how Chase was at Edmonton last year.

Maybe if Mo had not been injured , he would have stepped up.

Matrix, what great pictures! Interesting theories on why there have been more problems for your juvies this year. :girlsad3:

During our down time while nest watching, Matrix and I loaded some of his pictures on my computer. Cropping them tonight and found this nice series of a Juvie coming into the ledge.

Arrived downtown at 6:30 and saw two falcons on the AEP tower. I couldn't tell if it was two boys or Mom and sons. They were within the rungs with is not usually Mystic spot but I couldn't swear to who was who. They were gone in a flash. As the evening went on we did see some great flying as the juvie chased they persistent crows who have yet to move on. We also saw a juvie chasing birds. Matrix will have some photos after he has a chance to go through all that he captured. We saw one juvie go to the tower to roost for the evening and lost track of Mystic sly lady that she is. We did not see Mo but we're still not alarmed by that as this is exactly how the fledge season played out last year. We're adopting a wait and see attitude and last year we waited till spring to see him again.
