I'm surprised your kids have dispersed already. Ours fledged the same time & Jane still sees all 4 around the nest ledge every night. Often we have at least one on the ledge. Well, maybe with just boys, they learn faster? We expect ours to be here til the end of July/early August. :girlcrazy:

They were not there this past weekend...but perhaps they are in a nearby area....Going by last year they were not around much once they learned to fly....They never go back to the nestbox at this site...
Catwoman....You are probably onto it... with them being male...
We have had 7 males in the past two years, and one female...one was banded female last year... but was male....

3rd times a charm...come on 2014!!!!!! :corkpop: LOL :toast

All interesting observations and comments. Can definitely still see the damage to Mo's wing. I was encouraged to see that he could hunt, even if a hummer, plus he's still around so that tells us he's able to take care of himself cause I don't think Mystic was into sharing. Not with sons to feed.
Last year, towards the end of juvie training, we observed Mystic going far beyond their reach. Higher and higher till they just couldn't follow. I know we shouldn't apply our thoughts to them, but it was like she was teaching them to find their own way and get on with their lives without her. She was a tough task master and the expectations were high.
I would be surprised to see the remaining two at this point. They disbursed early last year. We had maybe a month with them and then they were gone. We hope that they will show up somewhere and we can identity the bands.
With the increasing population, we are going to see many changes at the sites we can watch. It's what we all hoped for and wanted. Now WE are going to have to live with and accept the results. It's their reality and they accept it. We apply the emotion while they sacrifice themselves for what instinct tells them is the right thing to do. Human parents could take a lesson. Falcon/Raptor watching is not for the faint of heart. They teach us to move on and get on with the getting on. Seems like there's a lot of us that relate to that.
At this point in time, they've done their thing. Hopefully Mystic and Maurice will renew their bond for next season. Both will start their molt now and activity will decrease. Matrix was so worried last year about Mystic's late molt looks to be different this year.
What we can do is observe, record, and post. Perhaps our observations will contribute to a study of the bird we love and our comments will be of importance to someone in the future. :thumbup

Went for a short watch as Saturday this week is out...
Arrived at 6pm...Things were pretty quiet...the various birds downtown were going about their business without any hesitation and doves and pigeons doing alot of gliding about...which they do not do when the know where a peregrine is at. Had just texted Cheryl, about seeing nothing for about a half hour, when I looked up from phone...there were two, that had come in from the east past the Canton Club....doing a tandem hunt over downtown!! Whipped out the camera, and started shooting...
One was above the other and through the lens it appeared to be Mystic above and Mo below chasing the pigeons...When pics were downloaded, that is what happened...That was the extent seeing Mo...He is flying Great!! Old raggy andy wings, as he is in what appears to be a heavy molt...but it could be just the iodine stain and or missing feathers...but his primaries appear different lengths...I suppose it could be broken off tips too...but it isn't hurting his flight...the lil bugger was FAST!!..
He dissapeared behind the Key building as Mystic did a cool low approach to the heating/cooling hut atop the Key Building...She snuck up on the edge to try to suprise the pigeons!!!...
They were not up there and so she settled down and did some preening and observing of her own...The birds around the garage were all on high alert...the robins nesting in the trees in the containers behind the First Ladies Building especially were upset...one sat on the roof of the building with worms in it's mouth alarm calling for a lonnngggg time...They know when Mystic or Mo is in hunt mode!!! Somehow!

So after about 45 minutes, Mystic takes off and comes to the far side of the garage...looking down at the edge...and then turned and headed of toward her typical succesfull southern hunting grounds...
That was it as the light is decreasing...left a little after 8pm...rain was yet again moving in...
One thing that was different about the pics was the light play on the falcons during their tandem hunt pics...They looked really silver!!! Almost appearing like gulls!!

This will be the last watch for some time, for me....The boy's are gone....this was the third watch in almost 3 weeks... with no sign of the remaining two...I can only Hope that they turn up someday at a nest that is monitered!!

Cam is "unplugged" so we may have a long wait till next season!!!

Thanks for your report & pics, Matrix. Glad Mo is doing well & I'm always glad that the adults have each other for company when the kids leave. Yeah, this time of the nesting season is always sad. Still some nests where the kids haven't fledged yet so we'll have them to watch until Australia nesting begins.

Beautiful pictures Chad. :ohyes:
You've done a great job recoding the nest history for this year. :thanku Mo's wing looks better I think.
It is a little different from last year in that he was absent till spring. Hopefully next year he will not get injured and we'll get to observe him during fledge. :flirty:

Australia is coming up and what a joy it was to watch that cam last year. Can't wait.

8/25/13 Evening Watch....... The Evening Began with a bang! Had Mo and a Hawk...Maybe Coopers or Sharp Shinned doing a tandem Hunt around the building to the NW of the CC... SO MANY PIGEONS!! Easy a thousand!! Flocks of starlings covered the far tower...After Mo went back to the CC the Hawk came back around the other side and looped over by the Key BUilding...scattering the good size flock of pigeons off the roof...and glided like it was going to go to the CC..However, suddenly, it vered off to the east...(found out later Mystic was perching on the east side of the CC...So for a while the hawk had me almost convinced there was a subadult peregrine in the vicinity...Things didn't stay quiet for long...Mystic shot out and gave her all for the huge flocks of pigeons...had so much trouble keeping a bead on the falcon...It is next to impossible with that many birds!!! Peregrine's blend in well with pigeons...they are built so much alike..even some colour similarities that when all mixed up they kind of become one! LOL..Anyway...Mo took another turn when Mystic didn't succeed and had went back to the east side of the CC...He ended up on the other parking garage office roof. Where I believe is a puddle of water..as he jumped down below the edge and stayed there for quite some time before flying out and back to the North side of the CC...Things then quieted down for about an hour and a half..Then...One of them appeared at the edge of where i was at on the garage...coming up over the railing so fast I just stood there like... DUH! LOL.....Happened so darn fast I didn't even think to raise the camera...shot up over my head and veered back to the CC!!! Later the same thing happened and got a good pic of Maurice's rear end! LOL Sooo...not sure what THAT is all about...but there IS a robin's nest, with babies, over the railing edge, behind the First Ladies Building! I suppose he is after the adult robins, because they carried on and on... and on.... after he swooped over me... Later, they did two tandem hunts together over the Key and the south side of the garage...Oh! Almost forgot!! Mo was escorted back to the CC by a little Kestrel...who quickly left when he saw Mystic!! LOL..But he claimed the Antennae at the Police Building for a while...just to show her he wasn't REALLY scared...As the evening came down to low light a nighthawk passed over and thought for sure Mystic would go after it...but she didn't...She stayed on the upper gutter corner. (after hanging out with a pigeon on the Key Building sign) Mo had made a loop up to the AEP tower and was there when I left as darkness came....Such tolerance of other species this time of year...Hope the hawk moves on...Last year (2012) the hawk that got used to M&M's tolerance and staked a claim to downtown, is most likely the one that ended up dead at the base of the CC, when M&M's hormones kicked into gear!! All in all...M&M look good! Mystic is very rust coloured right now...Her mother Hillary had alot of peachy/rusty colour to her...but it will fade quickly to her beautiful white...Maurice's Tail right now is short and stubby...reminds me of a hummingbird...Appears he lost most of the tail all at once and the all are growing in...POOR...MO! I don't know how the lilttle tiercel keeps on trucking...but his body looks fat so he is doing just fine! I will put three pics in an album that showcase the stubby tail feathers...Eating that hummingbird must have "rubbed off" on him!!!

Mo going to get a drink on this rooftop...both he and Mystic disappear down on the roof periodically and fly out with no food...so assume drinking water:

Image

MO after he swooped me.... for the second time!! LOL...(Note..His stubby tail):

Image

Late evening Mo zooming over me on a tandem hunt with Mystic:

Image

Mystic flying past the church..she wasn't hunting...the pigeons somehow know when she isn't..they never even flew...

Image

One Word...Mystic!! :)
