So, after feeding, both DC & B flew off separately with prey leftovers.

At 4:01pm - DC arrives on deck again wailing, I think with fresh prey... looked black feathered to me! and then took off...

Amazing...

Last inside image before Beauty cached leftovers - not as big as what DC just had... and the food he was feeding to the kids was already defeathered!

5:27pm - DC arrives with FOOD!!!!

Well sort of.. He's on other side of main cam with food, eating it, or maybe prepping it? B is perched on front of box lip.

He's chupping. She's chupping a little.

Beauty returns to her babies. DC still out on corner. Kids are all asleep.

5:36pm - DC just delivered the meal to Beauty in the box. Both trying to take off same piece of prey to feed kids. Beauty gives a piece to DC... DC stays in the box for a few, then flew off. Beauty continues to feed.

Got video. Will convert in a few minutes and upload.

Delurking here. I wanted to say thank you to all those taking pictures and video. I can't watch the cams while at work and the captures and pictures make it so easy to keep up with this charming pair and now their three little fluffeyasses*. I started watching this site because of DC/dot.ca (I'm in Canada so when he was identified as the new tiercel here it sparked an interest in this site) but I've stuck around because your enthusiasm is catching!

Cat

*a non-technical** term for those fluffy hatchling falcons before their juvie plumage comes in
** but it should be a technical term... just don't say it out loud too fast ;)

6:25pm - prey exchange. DC landed on far corner with prey. B came out of box, took prey and flew off. DC still on corner. If he heads to the box quickly, he'll find a leftover wing he can feed the kids!

Welcome to BCAW, Cat! So glad to have you with us! :grwelcom

Mw, I loved the videos of both parents feeding the babies! With 2 parents that want to be hands-on & DC's great providing skills, these 2 could easily handle 5 kids--maybe next year! The only other times I can think of that both parents fed at the same time were at 5 eyas nests & when the kids were bigger & really went through the food!

I thought that was adorable when Beauty fed DC & he in turn fed it to baby!

With the rate Dotca is hauling in (fresh) prey and then both parents feeding the trio, these kids will be fledging in two or three weeks  :laugh

hey mac,

You mean the baby swallowed a band? Oh that's not good. Mind you pigeon bands are much, much smaller than a falcon band so it might just 'pass through'. Was the baby choking? Or did it swallow fine and seem fine afterwards?

Usually if it has trouble with too large a piece or something, the parent will reach in and pull it out for them. Falcons have a pretty tough digestive system when you consider all the parts they eat.

They won't do anything over there regardless as I believe they have a 'let nature take it's course policy' if I remember right so let's hope all is well.

I just watched the video. It swallowed pretty much the whole foot + ring + probably 1/4 of leg bone. I didn't know if chicks are able to produce pellets like adults are? If it irritates the crop, maybe it will expel it?

I'm honestly not sure what age they start casting pellets but I do know that I just read that baby eaglets can cast pellets so I expect might be the same for raptors - as they are also a bird of prey.

I know that owls cast pellets but falcons didn't know, until now. :girlcrazy:
