She looks like she's asleep....in her opinion, she doesn't need to be incubating yet...poor thing...

So, I think Dan has been on duty since at least 4pm, if not earlier.

7:46pm - Dan is up and just left ..as I type this. I think Cher just came in. Looks like she's standing on the side of the box, so we are seeing her back. Light is fading very fast right now. Looks like she might be chupping. She's settling on the eggs now...7:48pm.

I was watching him this afternoon, and kept noticing him shimmying on the eggs. Today is day 36 since the last egg was laid. Well, I was watching San Jose at the same time. Dan & Clara were both doing the shimmy. Of course, Clara was doing it with much more determination, because I think she's trying to help hatch. But I don't remember seeing Dan shimmy on the eggs like that while he was incubating. And it wasn't just rotating. And I know he can handle 4 eggs easily, so it wasn't like they were slipping.

Few other things I noticed... when Cher was standing in the scrape this afternoon, she would occasionally bow over the eggs and start chupping. I don't know if she saw or heard Dan, or if maybe she was hearing/feeling something going on.

Also, remember she brought prey in after she laid her egg. That reminds me of a parent when hatch is coming...

So, just had a weird feeling...

And.. Poor Clara - storm is moving in and I think they are getting lightning in San Jose. The nest box keeps lighting up and she's looking out.

Mwplay, I think you have the right idea about the shimmying. I've noticed that when eggs are trying to hatch, at least the mom shimmies to try to help. I wonder if when Cher was standing over the eggs, she was hearing one or more chicks peeping inside the eggs. Sounds like we might get at least 1 hatch from Lil's eggs. Just hope that there is an emergency plan in effect that if the chick(s) aren't being fed enough, they can be removed from the nest.

Something just occurred to me & its an encouraging thought. Now that Cher has laid an egg, if one of Lil's hatches, she might think its her own chick so we shouldn't be concerned about its safety. (Sounds good to me anyway. I mean, since she's a new mom, she might not realize that her egg hasn't been incubated long enough to hatch!) :flirty:
