Sage has posted more details over at Imprints..so in fairness - I'll post the link here. Apparently they have video of BB attacking a man 1600 feet from the nest and felt they had no choice but to remove her.

It's interesting but we have had similar complaints about O'connor at her old site but since she came to our site and people are not near the site like they were at the hospital..she's quite docile in comparison. I wish they had tried other options. I wonder how her mate will react having seen her being trapped and taken away...that's just heartbreaking for him to lose his mate like that.

You know this reminds me of Alcoa when they said that Shelia was agressive.

Well we are not perfect here, but we warn everyone around nesting time, to wear hard hats when on buildings surrounding the area.
Gord was grazed by a falocn once downtown Edmonton but like he said , he should have had a helmet on.

I always feel there is something they are not telling us.

then you have the guys there in SAn that just go out on the roof ,when they know falcons rest there.

I shake my head

I edited a bit

thanks for the additional information carly. As much as we bird lovers hate to see this happens, I am a little more at ease about this situation.

Why could they not relocate her to another environment/place.

Cliffs in the mtns, remote areas (like the west area Zion Nat. Park ... it has closed off
a part of the trails (very high up) for nesting season.

Here is another article
UB’s dive-bombing falcon captured, shipped to refuge facility

BB – the over-aggressive mother falcon who ruled the skies over the University at Buffalo South Campus the past several years – is done dive-bombing unsuspecting victims around the Main Street neighborhood.

Sage's post on Rfalconcam-

I just got a call from Connie and we were both crying over what has transpired today.

DEC was called to a meeting at UB about an attack BB made on a man walking to his car, 1600 ft from the nest. The man was quite bloodied and the incident was captured on the UB security cam and played for the DEC.

It was UB's decision which the DEC had to go along with, that BB must be removed from the site. The DEC managed to safely get her in a mist? net on the roof. Yankee was on hand, screaming. BB was not injured and was surprisingly good on being handled. She was transported to a safe site. Her future is uncertain but she cannot be released anywhere because of her extreme aggressiveness.

Many attacks by BB have been reported in the past, but they were usually during fledge times. She has put UB at too much risk now with her strange behavior. I have always pleaded that she of course attacks during that few weeks around fledge time. I have personally told neighborhood people walking their dogs through the area to leave, and walk close to buildings as they do so.

UB is okay with having Peregrines on site and Yankee will stay. It is hoped that he can yet attract a mate migrating through the area in time for this season.

BB gave us fifteen chicks and she is in our hearts forever.

It was the University of Buffalo that requested BB be removed from their campus-DEC had to go along with it.

I'm very saddened by the turn of events with "my" BB. I understand why she was removed and just wish I would have made the trip to see her at UB. I was truly blessed to have a falcon named after me (at BB's banding in 2007), have her survive to adulthood and to be able to watch her on the falcon cams for a few years. It's been great getting messages and seeing photos of her from Sage.

I am grateful that she had 15 offspring and that most were banded. Her legacy lives on in them. I still monitor BB's parents in Detroit and her older brother (2006) in Mt. Clemens.

I hope they find a good facility for BB and that she adjusts to the change.

This is just so sad to me...I certainly don't want people getting hurt, but removing her just evokes so much anger. Of course these words by sage.."Her future is uncertain but she cannot be released anywhere because of her extreme aggressiveness." cause me to be extremely worried. I just hope she will be able to adjust to her captivity. Its one thing to have a bird in rehab for extended periods of time, but to cage her when she's only known "wildness" is so tragic. Maybe a really gifted falconer will step up and volunteer to take and train her so that at least she can have periods of freedom.

Hugs to those of you who have held a special place in your hearts for BB.

I still am not nor will I ever be . I think people see her aggressiveness as something that is a defect but it's not - it's inherited through evolution and the reason they survived millions of years until we came along.. In the wild a falcon wouldn't survive nesting on a cliff with all the predators around, they have to be fierce - it's not a flaw, it's what you want to see in a falcon for them to survive. Like it or not, she sees us a predator and rightly so given what we've done to her species in the past.

I think this is another one of those 'unintended consequences' of bringing them into an urban environment and sadly she's being punished for not conforming to humans and inconveniencing them. It's what we humans do - try to tame and control everything around us.

I know I can't change it and my heart breaks for her, this beautiful, fierce wild bird is now going to die in captivity just for doing what comes naturally to her. It's just so unfair.

You expressed my thoughts exactly carly. I agree with everything you said. BB is just doing what she was made to do. This is getting to be an all to common experience. . . we have successfully brought these birds back from possible extinction ... now we're going to play God and pick and choose where we want them and which ones are allowed to stay.

There isn't an angry enough emoticon for how I feel about this.

And again I can't post picture but here is an article that has a picture of BB in the idiots hands :tantrum2:

State relocates falcon to permanent care facility

This female is unbanded (pics to follow)...I can't tell if Yankee was buzzing the box because he saw her as an intruder or if they were courtship aerials...she has been bopping in and out of the box..and I can see him flying periodically...

Wouldn't it be something if it wasn't BB, but another falcon, who attacked that man! If the attacks continue, what will they do then?
