Well, I just caught a feed at Blackdog. I can't imagine how those chicks are alive still. Two are covered on their midsections with black, like some kind of flesh eating disease, and couldn't tell about the 3rd as it was on it's back the whole time kicking. I didn't even look at the archives. I feel so sorry for them, parents and chicks. I won't look again.

I still can't get over no one that (MONITORS) the nest hasn't seen that there is something terribly wrong, I'm sorry but if they can't keep up & I understand that they are VERY busy, they should at least find someone that can keep track at least for the falcons sake & listen to the reports.

Well it looks like we are down to one very weak chick at Blackdog
Dad is there right now feeding the dead chick to the surviving chick. I have video but it is very upsetting, so now we'll never know what was wrong with them

I am so furious with RRP right now I want to scream. I made sure they knew I was upset there so I'll probably get booted this time :furious: :furious: :furious:

This makes me so mad....I am just furious... :tearhair

I don't know what else we could have done..you posted at RRP, I sent emails (which were never responded to). KF, I hope you go and Post that Vid over at RRP (I don't want to see it)..and you can share how furious I am as well (since they never approved my membership)..

we tried to warn them and it did NO good. Granted, there may have been nothing they could do, but if that was the case, somebody should have come out to say that..Isn't RRP the forum for the XCEL nests?

Yes they are the place for all of the Xcel nests, I just hate it, I know they are busy, but you know if they would have said that at least I would have known they were at least listening.
It is just sad. I will post the video I'll make sure I put a warning in bold red lettering, hopefully if they see that they may at least respond. (Won't hold my breath, I'd probably fall over dead).

Well, that is really sad news. I'm sure they don't have biologists nearby to rescue these chicks anyway. Xcel is nice enough to host all these falcon boxes, so I guess we just have to take things as they are at these cams (except Decorah of course). What a sad year this has been across the country.

I agree with points made here Barb. 2 years ago many people were quite upset with Indiana when there was no intervention. Laura made a good point that intervention may save a weak chick who, in the long run, could potentially be the first domino that weakens the species. This is part of nature, and while I do not like witnessing it, I must accept that fact. And while we are upset that the biologist did not answer an email. yours could have been one of a thousand they received. I believe that the biologists have good intentions, and we must not lose sight of that.

Okay, I have said my peace/piece. I will sit down and move on....

Barb and gigi...I don't disagree with what you have said. My anger comes from the lack of response/acknowledgement. there is probably nothing that could or should have been done, just like at Indy. But at Indy, they at least acknowledged the issue and made a decision. I know that everyone connected with the XCEL nests is extremely busy right now but it only takes 30 seconds to respond to an email or post on RRP that there will be no intervention. Gigi, look how quickly they responded to you about the female at Genoa!!!

So, we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one!!! :thumbup

the surviving chick...whatever is affecting it, is getting worse. I just hope its strong enough to fight it off..

So WHAT is the affliction??? Does any biologist know WHAT it is?? Is it communicable? Is it genetic? These are the reasons I would like to hear if there was a response...

If there happens to be a domino affect...and it's been noted before...it looks like it is spreading?.....

matrix...we have no clue...we can only speculate..mites? Lice? some kind of fungus? genetic disorder? who knows...It would be nice to have a professional "guess" as to what it could be if for no other reason than if we see something like this again...

Well it seems that THEY finally went up to the nest at Blackdog & found that the baby had parasites,
(GEE YA THINK).
I'm sorry but I'm still very upset that they didn't do something sooner, before the others had to die. Its not like they weren't told numerous times about something being wrong.
Well I'm hoping they caught it in time, now the waiting game starts

Avian Parasites

There is a picture that is terrible but I'm hoping that the baby got the care it needed.

Thanks KF....I guess what we've been seeing on the baby is dried blood? I am very glad they finally did something. I just guess this baby was strong enough to handle the parasites. This certainly explains why mom has been picking at the baby so much..such a shame that the other two died before they went up there.

Since it was a parasite issue and not a health/genetic issue, then maybe this remaining baby has a chance.

Well I just went and looked & you can see just by the way it is standing and moving around that it feels better. I'll get some pictures up tonight, now that I'm not afraid to turn the cam on.

I just checked on the one chick and it is looking much better but I am so angry that these people let it suffer for so long and the others were pretty much eaten alive. Why would you can provide a nest for the falcons and a cam for the viewers and then totally disregard both. They allowed unnecessary pain and suffering for the chicks, terrible stress for the parents, and misery for the viewers.
I was so sick over the situation that I couldn't even watch anymore :furious:
