I was just thinking that if BB really was the one who swooped on the pedestrian, and this new female is less aggressive, then MAN is "selecting" for the weaker of the species. I'm just saying . . .

If, however, this female was the one and continues to swoop, then I guess all females will need to go to jail.

I hope the locals reconsider what they've done and make it right.

You know what, Susan...if the attacks continue, then it wasn't BB..hmmmmmmm

Very sad for BB but happy for Yankee. Wonder where they put her and how she's doing. Probably, knowing the DEC, we'll never know what happened to her. :girlsad3:

Guess this is what they call good news bad news. The truth is the real threat to BB was the humans. Who needs another broom murder? By facility I hope they mean the wild where she belongs. The really troubling part is a biologist calls this unprecedented behavior by a Falcon. Must be a marine life specialist. This plants a very wrong impression of Falcons and Raptor behavior in the general public's mind. Even the tiniest Hummingbird is territorial and aggressive in it's defense. The truth is her behavior was bothersome. This is what their instinct tells them to do. Rarely will you see a Falcon give up the nest or babies without a fight to the death, unlike people. I don't think she needs rehab, she needs to be free. The garage manager in Canton loves to tell the story of standing on the top floor and Maverick snatching the hat off his head. He told me that story with tears in his eyes and great admiration for the bird. He also said he told people stay off the top floor it's nest season. Just say it like it is and set her free. People would probably be more understanding than labeling her Psycho Falcon and locking her up. While the degree of aggression may vary, no one is going to mess with a Falcon nest and get away with it if the adults are present. I think that's part of what we all love about them. Plus they aren't able to spin stories to their benefit. Again man is the lesser of all the creatures.

The great thing about getting older is you get to call shenanigans and you don't care anymore.

Wonderful post Cheryl-I still say we could put BB in the cliffs out west and
she could have a life like a falcon should.

I so agree. What a sad situation. Here's what they should have said:

Unfortunately BB, following her natural instincts, has increased her territory. Falcons will be aggressive during nest season and have a tendency to increase their territory. BB has attacked humans and we fear she cannot live in a suburban environment any longer. To protect her from human retaliation, we have decided to move her to a natural environment. This is a natural and expected happening. We insure this is the best for her future and have the best interests of BB at heart. We will insure her safe return to the wild to let her live her remaining years as she should, free and unencumbered from human intervention.

I am available for press releases. By contract. Sometimes the truth is the best course of action.

Great posts, Cheryl, & you're right--we certainly don't want another broom death.

I had first thought that the answer would be to set her free in the wild, but then I remembered that I've always heard that falcons will go where they want to go & she would end up right back in Buffalo. If falcons can migrate to South America & find their way back home, I would think they can find their way home from the wilderness. If that's the case, then as somebody mentioned in a prior post, the next best thing for BB would be if she were adopted by a good falconer, so she would at least be able to have a degree of freedom.

I asked Sage today if she knows where BB was placed and she answered "All I know is she's doing great."
