So right I mean this new guy Carl is trying but he has some big shoes to fill there. Just like here and all of you she helped me so many times right away and let me know right off the bat to ask anything and she would try and answer and if she didn't know the answer she would find it out for me, never got mad for all the questions and there were alot. :teehee:
I wonder it wasn't something about the sh** that happened at Buffalo she never said anything about quiting I'll really miss her imput

The unbanded female has been named "Dixie." Goes well with "Yankee" (even if he IS Canadian) :teehee:

Hi Fellow Falcon Followers!

A quick update regarding activity in the Buffalo area, which is not complete as some nest checks are still needed to get egg counts. Given as month/date

UB (University at Buffalo) 4 eggs by 4/10. Yankee from Niagara gorge is the male, with a new unbanded female we call Dixie.

CT (Central Termimal) has eggs, 1 as of 4/31, final count expected Sunday. Gleig from Hamilton is the female, a new unbanded male displaced Diamante from Rochester this year. In 2012, Gleig and Diamante killed Stella and drove Stash off to take over the tower.

ST (Statler)2 eggs by 4/4. Ojibwa is male; female unknown

NB (North Grand Island Bridge) 4 eggs by 4/5

SB (South Grand Island Bridge) 0 eggs by 4/5 and parents have not be seen. Duncan was the male.

C (Old Cargill grain elevators) ? eggs as we do not get count. Pair, possibly including Jean from Syracuse, may be nesting there again, having be spotted in same locations as seen last few years.

NF (Niagara Falls) probably 0 eggs as of a couple days ago. Male is Onyx, female Diamond if the same. Nestbox has shown some activity and signs of prey items; falcons have been spotted by Roger and I, plus Jacquie, in various spots such as the top of the old power plant, the tops of casinos which tower above the gorge.

I know some here have been very upset at BB at UB being removed, throwing around remarks that do absolutely no good. The university made the decision and called the authorities to remove her. BB's latest attack was before nesting season, before eggs, before hatches, before fledges. The university could no longer carry the liability. And right next to the nest tower is a sports field for children.

BB is an urban bird, hatched in Detroit, set up her nest site on MacKay Tower, on the highly populated campus. Fledges regularly go across the street to a VA hospital which also has great ledges for flight training. Signs were posted alerting people that these wild birds can be aggressive during nesting season. The university cannot prevent attacks. They did the only thing they could, call for the removal of the falcon after this latest off-season attack was caught on security video showing BB's bands. All attacks we by BB, not some pefa passing through who would have absolutely no reason to attack, it not being their territory!

We have other urban Peregrines here and never have this kind of problem.

If an urban Peregrine like BB is relocated to even a far-away place, it's likely to return very quickly back to its nest site or make another urban nest. These birds can migrate thousands of miles!

Please understand and don't throw stones. Urban/wildlife situations aren't always fairy-tale perfect.

Yankee has done a masterful job attracting a new mate to the nestbox on MacKay Tower on the UB campus and the university still hosts the live feed of two cams. We are thankful UB didn't ask for the removal of the nest box. They were aware the pefas would continue to nest there in the spot they chose, with or without a box. Now please join us in welcoming this 2013 nesting of Yankee and Dixie!

:grwelcom To BCAW, Sage....I know it was quite the journey for you to get here...so glad you did!!!

Thanks for all the great info about the Buffalo nests...there are a few that hold quite a bit of interest for several of our members here.

You probably already know this, but:

Gleig is the sister of Durand who is the resident female at Columbus, Ohio...currently incubating 4 eggs.

Diamond is a 2009 hatch from Canton, Ohio..so those members will be very interested to know if she was able to hold that territory.

Sorry to hear that Diamante lost his site. I will let the Rochester people know, in case they haven't heard. My guess is they are so on top of things that they probably already know.

...and thanks for the insight into the BB situation. Yankee did awesome attracting Dixie so quickly...they will be fun to watch.

Thank you for the warm welcomes! I don't know how it was so difficult for me to get registered! :gaaaaah: But I finally made it! :ohyes:

I should have mentioned that Diamond is my headline photo on http://www.facebook.com/PeregrinePlaceWNY and BB is the header on the blog which dates back farther. http://www.peregrineplace.com/

My avatar here is a CT hatch of Stash and Stella who was named Sage after she got rescued by the DEC. She had fallen into a two-story deep well that was filled with trash and broken glass!

Welcome to BCAW, Sage! :welcome And thank you for the run-down on the Buffalo nests. I think all of us love hearing about nests where the adults were hatched from sites where we watched the cams! :loveshow:

Thank you for all your comments and interest in our Western NY and Southern Ontario Peregrines!

Short update! The UB cams have been down this weekend! http://www.buffalo.edu/falconcam.html Since I cannot get them on the ipad, and I'm usually out, I'm in the dark most of the time. However, an intruder female came in when Yankee was taking over for Dixie. The intruder chased him out. Mel caught it and posted it on ,

so you can see her bands though in that the cams are no longer hi-def, we can't read them. Dixie did return later, and now the cams are down. I sent an email to my UB contact but he may not see it til tomorrow.

Holcim on the waterfront has had a new female visitor this week, and apparently a male showed up yesterday too. Is this the pair we think have nested in the nearby grain elevators for the past few years? Our contact at Holcim who gets a cam feed at his desk says this female looks different. I got this shot of her.

She has been screaming and scraping. Perhaps they had a nest failure at the nearby old Cargill grain elevators. Stay tuned for updates and IDs!

We expect hatches this week at Central Terminal and the North Bridge! :egghatch:
