Haya Settles In
by stewartfalcon

It has been a month since Haya was released at Pt. Pinole Regional Park. As readers of this blog know, she became self-sufficient almost immediately. What a wonderful reward for those who worked so hard to get her back in the wild!

Now the signal from telemetry transmitter has faded but not before Haya settled in to a pattern of regular perches and a hunting territory at the periphery of her old nesting territory. She favors an area centered on the building at 333 Hegenberger south of the Fruitvale Bridge. Observers find her habitually using the same perches and have seen her eating on several occasions. Views of her bands confirm her identity.

Thanks to many dedicated observers, we are learning more about a rebounding peregrine falcon population in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the case of Haya, the dynamics of territorial behavior at one site as well. In the new year, I am grateful to those many observers and for the opportunity they have all provided to witness a successful release and a robust peregrine falcon population after its brush with extinction.

Thanks for the continuing great news about Haya, Kitten! It has to be soooo rewarding to those involved with her treatment, rehabilitation & those observing her to see that after having been in captivity for so long, she has transitioned back into the wild so well! I'm glad there was no mention of her trying to regain her former territory. I guess that's an indication that peregrines are more concerned with self-survival than territorial battles. :sum9:

Thanks for the update. Glad to see that Haya has made no more attempts to take her nest back. We now know of several cases where the falcons have decided to survive rather than fight to the death. Maybe many others that we thought for sure had perished are really still there just on the perimeter somewhere.

I am so glad that Haya is continuing to do well. I hope she will find a new mate and a new nest, with no territorial battles. Some falcons who have lost their nest have turned up fairly close by, and others have shown up some distance away.

Posters on Yahoo forum reported mating on the nest ledge this morning at 7AM...

Fernando and Clara are talking the language of love... :loveheart:

They've been caught a few times in the last few days visiting the box & mating on the ledge or on the louver.

Over the weekend, I checked in and unfortunately, forgot how to capture a picture, so couldn't get a nestbox visit posted... :duh:

Food transfer on the louver this morning. Tuned in to find both on louver. Looks like Fernando brought in a grebe. He was taking his fill while Clara watched from other end of louver. Once he was finished, Clara came over to finish the meal off.

I had tuned in a little earlier to find one of the birds on the rungs near the Mayor's office wiping its beak. I think that may have been Clara after her breakfast, but I'm not at all sure since I didn't get a good look at front of its body/face.

I don't know I was just clicking on Cali cams and couldn't believe I saw something. Hopefully someone more familiar with the site will give us an ID.

Great catch!

That's the bris area near the mayor's office. No idea who this is. My guess is Fernando, but just read a post that Clara was hanging out in the sun there yesterday (Friday) around 2:20PM.

Not sure what time this was, but I know when Fernando first arrived on scene, he would fly at night. I think Clara normally tucks in someplace else, but I can't remember where at the moment. I'm thinking maybe someplace on campus, or on one of the buildings close to the nest box.

Not sure who is who but that might be FC down there by the box. Remember how he would scrape in that little pile of pebbles down at the other end last year? :loveheart2:

Image

Well the one in the box walked out to the drain , then flew over the wall and the other followed.

Maybe it was Clara.

Thanks. Interested in the history. When do they usually have eggs?
And does the cam move? I see the box and sometimes I see the building?
