A couple of more shots from that same feeding. Chick is so cute when it locks it's beak down, leans back, and refuses to take a bite. :loveheart2:

WOO HOO...Bonnie and Mike Superstars!!! :superstar:

5/20 Nestbox News Update:

May 20, 2013 - Morning Update
Staff, along with division volunteers and dedicated falcon observers Mike G. and Bonnie T., have been closely monitoring the webcam since the chick swap on Friday afternoon. While the chick transported to The Raptor Trust did not appear healthy, the Sea Isle City chick is behaving normally, feeding well and most importantly, has been accepted by the adults. Both adults are staying close to the nestbox, brooding the chick during the cool damp weekend and providing plenty of food. We're waiting for an update on the condition of the original chick, but it does appear to have some serious issues.

Hopefully the drama of the past week is behind us as we watch the new chick grow. We'll determine its sex the first week of June when biologists return to Jersey City to examine and band it. Meanwhile, we'll keep watching.

For more photos from Jersey City the day of the swap, visit Bird Cams Around the World. Thanks to Bonnie for the photo of the female and new chick to the right.

Thanks for stopping by Westend Old Bird!

Love those pics ljames! The chick did the lean-back yesterday too, getting spoiled as we all expected :teehee:

Thanks for posting the NN update, SGB! Still no update on the chick at the Raptor Trust. I may call them tomorrow afternoon if there's no news beforehand.

Just read on CWF's Facebook page that the chick removed on Friday was euthanized on Saturday. Only detail was that it had serious development issues. A necropsy will be performed; hopefully we'll find out more at a later date.

This was the longest feeding I've yet seen this season (nearly a half hour).

Athena a few minutes before flying off to get the food (she nearly got hit by a poop shot from the chick shortly after this pic! :teehee: ).

As sad as this is, it not as sad as keeping the nestling alive only to perish a little bit later. I just hope they get information from the chick and the eggs.

I am so sorry to hear about the poor little chick having to be euthanized .
:sorrow:
They did it pretty quickly so it must have had pretty significant problems. There have been numerous chick deaths this year it seems and fewer hatches. The weather has been most unusual, so I wonder if it has played a role. I don't even know if developmental problems could come from the eggs being exposed to the cold.

They are studying environmental causes. It wasn't the weather. There have been a few too many eyases with problems at this scrape.

I am quite concerned because this is happening elsewhere...Richmond the most recent..all 5 eggs fell apart and were infertile. Lansing was infertile (unusual for this pair) and I could go on and on. Unless agencies are able to test, everybody is gonna blame it on the weather and unusually cold/wet end of winter and early spring. I know that the UK is already questioning new toxins and other environmental issues...let's just hope that we're not headed for a second "Silent Spring"...biologists need to pay attention...

There was a 10-12 minute feeding a little over an hour ago. Athena recently jumped in the box during a sudden downpour. Very soupy airmass today, with scattered thunderstorms forecast much of the day (it's booming west of here). I love summer, but the air today is like breathing through a sponge.

Here's a snippet from the NJ DEP Peregrine report from last year:
"We plan to continue collecting unhatched, salvaged eggs for contaminant research, and to
continue monitoring nests to detect problems. New research suggests the high levels of brominated
fire-retardant chemicals (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) found in peregrines may affect adult
peregrine nesting behavior and nest success, which certainly bears watching in NJ."

http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/ensp/pdf/pefa12_report.pdf

A sad indicator of, despite how far environmental awareness and clean-up has come, it still has a long way to go. Eliminate DDT, 2 or 3 other things pop up to take it's place.

Athena and the chick watching a mid-afternoon deluge (it poured there for over a half hour straight).

Sometime after the rain, Six was watching over the chick, then Athena flew in with dinner (nearly tackled Six in the process!). Feeding lasted 10-15 minutes (Athena's body blocked the view again). Chick's crop looked a little bigger than it's own head! :teehee:
