The James River Bridge Falcon box was installed in 1991. It is located in the middle of the James River Bridge in Newport News Virginia (very close to the Norfolk Eagles).

James was first observed at the nest box in 1992. He was born in 1990 on the Leg-Mason Building in Baltimore Maryland. His long time mate, Virginia, appeared in 1993 and they nested in the box that year for the first time. Virginia was hatched in 1989 from the Leg Mason building too. James and Virginia continued to use this nest box until she died in 2005.

In 2006 Elizabeth became James' new mate. They have been nesting here every year since then.

2006: 4 eggs, all hatched
2007: 5 eggs, all hatched
2008: 4 eggs, 3 hatched
2009: 4 eggs, 4 hatched but one died a week later in a heat wave

James is the oldest known falcon in the US...he is 20!

2011 Update on the JRB pair:

Sadly, we have not seen James, the male of this pair, since July. A new male was spotted in October. By November, we saw Elizabeth with the new male. His remarkable similarities to James made everyone wonder, for good reason! The new male is 7/C, and was born in this nestbox in 2002. He is the son of James and Virginia. James and Virginia shared the same birthplace in Baltimore, and were a pair at JRB for many years. We have named the new male JJ (James Jr.) in honor of his famous father.

JJ:

Here are some photos of Elizabeth. She has no bands, and spots on her chest.

We haven't heard any reports since they fledged. You can find the latest updates under the thread "James River July-December" 2011.
