Critical Update. Kendal is Found Injured and In Care
July 21, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Tracy Simpson Reports:

After Friday’s storms rolled through, we went out to all of the nest sites in our areas to check on the adults and juveniles doing a quick headcount. On Saturday, a gentleman living in the Victoria Park and Ellesmere area found an injured Peregrine on the ground and called Toronto Wildlife Center. The injured Peregrine was an adult and was banded. After the bird had been delivered to care, the gentleman called our office to let us know of his rescue . We also received contact from TWC regarding the bird and his band number which was solid black recovery band 33 over Y. This bird was positively identified as Kendal, resident male from 240 Duncan Mill Rd., and he was now being examined for his injuries. It is believed that during the period of high winds as the front moved through that Kendal was in the air, lost control and struck a building. X-rays have indicated that he has a fractured clavicle and a fractured coracoid and is now being closely monitored. Bruce stopped by the Duncan Mill road nest site to check in on the rest of the family and found Quest over on the Westin building. The two girls were not in his view but will certainly be coming home for the supper hour looking for food. Our thoughts are certainly with Kendal in the hopes for his speedy recovery and we will keep you updated on his condition.

Quest has a new boyfriend
Marion Nash Reports:

CPF volunteer Bruce Massey has been keeping an eye on the family to make sure Quest is managing to keep up with the needs of her kids without Kendal and has discovered today that Quest has a new suetier.

Bruce was able to confirm by the band number 50 over X that the new male is Skye produced at the Etobicoke Bloor and Islington nest in 2011 and is on site courting her.

We are still not sure weather Kendal will ever recover well enough to be released back to the wild but we certainly never expected him to be replaced so soon.

We will be keeping an eye on the site to make sure that this years offspring are doing ok and will keep you posted on how they are doing and on the budding new romance.

Mixed feelings on this! Poor Kendal!

Skye was observed mating with a distant Beauty relative earlier this year:

NEW NEST SITE?? Brantford Grace Anglican Church Has a territorial Pair!!
May 13, 2013 - International, National and Local News

Tracy Simpson Reports:

A huge thank you to Doug Smith for finding us and giving us some great observation reports that allowed us to do a follow-up on his report of territorial peregrine activity in Brantford Ontario. Thanks Doug, Well done!! Bruce and I arrived in Brantford at 5pm and headed straight for the church. As we drove into town, there were very few tall buildings in the area and this section of Brantford is a mix of commercial main street strip stores and residential. The Grace church is about .5km from the Grand River and is surrounded by houses. There is a parkette across the street and we set up there. Pulling up to this church I expected maybe Kestrels and was blown away to find a female peregrine on the back side of the church. She was roosting on a lower ledge of the bell tower that is a tall square tower. After 20 minutes she took off to the east and circled back with a male in tow. The male passed her in the air and reached the tower roof first. He had food. She took the food from him and they copulated. He took off back to the east and out of view. She flew out and back to the bell tower and ate. She has a purple USFW on her left leg and has a black over red recovery band reading 32/X. Her name is Rosie and she is a 2011 hatch from the Macomb County Building in Michigan and is daughter to Nick and Hathor at that site. I got a shot of them mating and the male had a solid black recovery band on his left leg and silver USFW on the right; Canadian born. We waited to see what Rosie would do after eating and she flew off to the east after the male. We walked east into a commercial section of town and found a few more churches and buildings that we scanned. We found the male on another church closer to the river and he was soaked. He must have taken a bath in the shallow section of the river. We were able to read his band and I photographed it. It is solid black 50/X and it is Skye, banded in 2010 at Etobicoke Sun Life and is from Angel’s last brood before O’Connor took over the site. He stayed on the church in the sun drying and we took a look for Rosie but couldn’t find her. As we were running out of light, we headed down to the river where a local resident said he saw them flying and looked around. The bridge that spans the Grand River has some amazing recessed areas that could easily be used by nesting peregrines. The Grace church bell tower is the tallest thing around but they actually can’t get into the open spaces in the tower as its chicken wired from the inside to keep birds out. The only option would be the roof of the tower. I can’t say for sure if they are nesting or not but they are definately bonded and copulating. The focus of their activity appears to be the Grace church. Bruce and I will go back for a good day of recon before things get really busy and try and figure out where they intend to end up.

I believe he is a brother to Dot.Ca (different hatch year).

Carly did the history back in May regarding Skye's mate Rosie. It was under the Columbus 5/13/13 thread:

Did you see my news about Beauty's niece pairing up with DC's brother from 2 years ago? They posted they wrong year..Skye was from 2011 and is with Rosie who is Nick and Hathor's daughter from Michigan. Hathor is Beauty's full sister from 2003! What are the odds that would happen? I put it under Etobicoke since Skye was Jack and Angel's from her last brood with us.

Quest is just doing what she has to for survival and to keep her site - we mourn the loss of a mate but they get on with it rather quickly.

You are so right Carly. Glenn Stewart has said in the past that how quickly a mate is replaced (upon death, removal by injury, etc), is an indication of the health of the peregrine population.

Used to hear of peregrines waiting weeks or months for a mate...mwplay's reply about Glen is so right on!! Many think of our site, Canton, as "off" the peregrine path..but there has never been an opening for more than a day since 2002....
Well, the good news is that Skye is young and Kendle is experienced..so if Kendle gets to be releaseable there may not be much of a challenge...Quest will be putting alot of energy into moulting and may not bond much for a while...

However ...can't help but note what a set of names Quest and Skye are together! (human thing) LOL

just a note.
as much as we have our favorites, nature does not work that way. When our great male got injured in 2011, beginning of august, Radisson fed and watered the kids on her own, Gord helped a bit by putting in some quail. But a little over a week later we started to see things change and then we realized , a new male was a courting.

Gord waited to release our male till migration , so he would not have confrontation after release. Never good for a healing falcon.

yours do not migrate do they. I guess it will be what it will be.

They've got a beautiful picture of Skye on Rfalconcam Facebook. It seems he's got more of a rosy breast than Dot.ca. If I remember correctly, I think Carly mentioned Angel had a rosy breast? Handsome fellow!

From CPF

    August 8

    Tracy Simpson Reports:

With so many of us still awaiting the status of Kendal’s condition, we have turned our attention to the Duncan Mill Road nest site to monitor Quest and her family. Recently a young male, Skye from Etobicoke Sun Life, has been visiting with her and hanging about in the territory. On Sunday, Bruce and I attended the site and were watching the pair interact and things have become much more friendly of late. When we arrived, Skye was actually in the nest box and was working on scraping out a bowl while Quest watched from two doors down. She sat on the ledge and occasionally stretched out to look in Skye’s direction. There was no discomfort, just curiosity. When Skye finally exited the box, he moved onto the ledge right beside it and Quest flew over to claim it as hers. She let Skye know that she was very much in charge of things and he was alright to hang about for now. It would seem that she has accepted his presence and the pair began to relax. Quest spent much of her time in the box preening, sleeping and housekeeping and Skye stayed on the ledge beside the box doing much of the same. All was calm, quiet and accepting.

We are unsure what the future will bring, or which male will rule the site, but we can say for sure that the nest site will remain active. We will continue to keep you updated on the latest news regarding Kendal, Quest and Skye so check back soon.

    Pictures will follow very shortly.

Pictures from Sunday of Quest and Skye

August 09, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Tracy Simpson Reports:

As promised, some pictures of Quest and Skye taken on Sunday during our visit.

The first three are of Quest and the last three are of Skye. Both birds were relaxed in the morning sun and comfortable with each others presence. As you can see in the photos, Skye is sitting next to the nest box and he has been accepted being there.
