Couldn't see the unbanded right leg at first glance, but that should be Monty

news from FB

Well, what a strange day.

This is the moment Glesni landed on the nest at 06:40 this morning - Glesni on the left, her cousin Blue 24 in the middle.
Both females were calm for about three minutes and then all heck broke loose. We last saw the birds at around 10am this morning, both chasing each other up river. We're sure they will be alright, but frankly, we have no idea what has happened to them for the last eight hours.
Monty is currently perching on the larch perch with a half eaten mullet.
We've been working on the Chat all day today also, it will soon have its own server to deal with all the new people that have recently registered! Thanks for your patience.
Also, we have news on the Observatory opening soon - just days away now. More news in the next day or two

PS: news and photos of the previous days here viewforum.php?f=162

There is an unwritten rule in the osprey world. Boys fight boys and girls fight girls.
It took just a few minutes for Monty to dispatch Dai Dot after he arrived on Tuesday. Dai's bond to the nest was weak and he already knew it was Monty's nest, he'd seen that first hand for the last three years.
Blue 24's bond is slightly stronger. She seems much less eager to relinquish her hold on to what she sees as a good nesting site and a good provider - Monty. She even let him mate with her for the first time yesterday morning, literally moments before Glesni joined the party. Monty had been providing her with fish of course, Dai hadn't.
Both Glesni and Blue 24 were around late last night, Blue 24 standing firm on the nest at around 11:30pm, still claiming it as hers.
There are no hard and fast rules from here on in. Either cousin could come out the winner, we'll have to just wait and see.
Wonder what Monty thinks of it all!

Monty meanwhile takes his available options and mates with Blue24 -

all things are staying calm...

Glesni Comeback

Here we go - it's starting to kick-off..

(Blue 24 on the nest at the very start)

and slow motion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9LU1YK ... e=youtu.be

Blue24 disappeared after the attack, and then half an hour later returned to the nest.

# 1
As if Monty doesn't have enough women problems - another one has just landed next to him!

This one has no leg rings but we'll check through previous recordings to see if we recognise her. No sign of Glesni or Blue 24 yet this morning.

# 2
Absolute chaos here this morning. Ospreys everywhere!

Four birds have been around, the big fight a few minutes ago was between Blue 24 (yes, she's back!) and the unringed female (see below).
Blue 24 back on the nest now and Monty has gone fishing. Frankly, we don't blame him.

#3
Monty has just brought back lunch for his new mate, Blue 24. Flounder on the menu today.
No sign of Glesni.

Yesterday

Glesni on the nest and they're mating...
WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP..
START THE CARRR - AGAIN...

summary

Deadly Rivals
This is the sixth year we have been recording ospreys on the Dyfi nest. Never have we witnessed what we saw today however, and we have it all on film.
Glesni has been back for six days and on her third major attempt to win her nest back, it looks as though she has been successful.

Here are the highlights of today’s amazing action, condensed into less than four minutes, one female osprey displacing another and all captured and recorded. Put your seat belts on.
