Osprey web cam equipment due this week
Has to be installed before birds return to nest

March 27, 2013
WENDY FRASER

Fingers crossed, the equipment for Lillooet’s new osprey web cam should be here today or next week at the latest.

The Lillooet Naturalist Society wants to install the webcam on the old Fraser River bridge as soon at it can, before the ospreys return to Lillooet for their nesting season.

Monty's back! Osprey that became Springwatch star returns to Welsh nest after African winter
11 Apr 2013 11:46

Bird of prey back at Dyfi Osprey Project near Machynlleth, waiting for return of breeding partner Nora

A male osprey which became a household name on BBC’s Springwatch last year has returned to his Welsh nest after wintering in West Africa.

Monty is now waiting on the nest at Dyfi Osprey Project, located on Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust’s Cors Dyfi Reserve, near Machynlleth, for the arrival of his breeding partner Nora, who is now more than two weeks overdue.

The pair has reared four offspring – three males and one female – over the past two years but three are believed to have perished in Africa.

Sadly Ceulan, last year’s sole survivor of the horrendous summer weather, died in nets and the satellite tracking devices of the 2011 brood have all failed.

However, Dyfi osprey project manager Emyr Evans remains hopeful that Einion, the first osprey born on the Dyfi for more than 400 years, has survived and will return this summer.

He believes Nora, like many other ospreys and other migrating birds, has been caught up in the bad weather in Western Europe.

He said: “It's not just ospreys that are late this year - everything is,” said Mr Evans.

“Swallows, martins, warblers, wheatears, they are all stuck in that huge ‘toothpaste squeezer’ somewhere over France and Spain.

“Nora is not far behind, she's just making Monty wait a bit.

“After all, Monty kept her waiting nine days last year.

“Never a good thing to keep a woman waiting. I know.”

Nearly 42,000 people read Mr Evans’ Facebook announcement of Monty’s return within hours and thousands of well wishers have left messages.

Work is underway on a 360-degree observatory to transform the reserve into a year-round, state-of-the-art wildlife facility.

The project, which is due for completion in late summer, is being supported by £928,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Visitors can see live, High-Definition nest camera footage at the visitor centre on large plasma screens, visit http://www.dyfiospreyproject.com

Yes, Terka, and a lot of fighting between them... Imteresting, let's see how all ends up. The egg is not being incubated properly, I'm afraid.
