Look who's back!

Glesni was away for just over 6 hours today - this is completely normal behaviour for females at this stage of the breeding season.

A sure sign however that migration is not too far away in her thoughts.

The earliest we expect Deri and Gwynant to migrate is around five weeks after fledging
- that takes us to early September.
Monty will almost certainly stay until they have both gone.

In all probability, Deri and Gwynant will not fish for themselves until they start their migration,
relying instead on the free handouts.

And who can blame them in this weather!

Glesni's work is almost complete for only her second year of breeding. Soon, the urge to head southwards will be greater than the urge to stay.

It's a glorious morning on the Dyfi. Here is a stunning picture of Glesni - still in breeding mode and adding to her nest. For now.

Deri is turning out to be an awesome osprey. Monty caught this mulllet for her, but she has been testing out her wings and fishing behaviours over the Dyfi River today, in readiness to catch her own fish.

Look out for a great video tomorrow morning

We often hear of young ospreys being taught how to fish by their parents - this is not true.
All the fishing know-how is already locked into their genetic code, all an osprey needs is the anatomical tools to fish and some practice.
It's not often we see this 'testing' and 'practice' behaviour - yesterday we actually filmed it.
Here is some truly rare footage of Deri, around 400m away from the nest over the Dyfi River, doing just that.

Leg Pulling
We're partial to the odd joke and some leg pulling here at DOP.

Looks like we're not the only ones..

Great news from the Dyfi Osprey Project. Blue 80, a Glaslyn chick from 2012, landed on the larch perch near the Dyfi nest this morning.
Blue 80 hatched out on May 11th, 2012 from an egg laid on April 3rd.
He was ringed on June 19th at 39 days old:
Darvic ring right leg, blue/white 80
BTO ring left leg. BTO no. 1431710
Weight 1420g. Wing 323mm.
Thanks to the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust for letting us know and for giving us permission to use the image.
After so many years of uncertainty it is great to know that more of the young Glaslyn Ospreys have survived and made it back safely to Wales and the U.K.

At 09:13 this morning, Aug 15th, 2014, an intruder osprey landed on the larch perch, right next to Deri.
He was a handsome male with a ring on his right leg - Blue 80.
Blue 80 is a two year old hatched in the Glaslyn nest on 11th May, 2012 - this is the first time he has ever been spotted back in the UK as an adult!!
Many congratulations to everyone at the Glaslyn.
Blue 80 now makes six returnees out of 21 birds fledged from this nest up to and including 2012 - a 30% return success, and that's notwithstanding any birds that haven't been spotted yet of course.
Ringing ospreys helps us understand more each year about the ecology and natal dispersion patterns of these birds.

Deri (right) and Gwynant are now around half way between fledging and migrating - they will be here for another two weeks or so.
Their flying skills have now reached level 'excellent', although they will still not catch their own fish.
Both are now in the 'gluttony' stage of development as can be seen from last week's fish pies. Screaming constantly for food despite seemingly having plenty. There is a good reason for this.
Deri and Gwynant will eat 100% - 200% more food than they need each day for the next fortnight. Their bodies will store this as fat and they will become big overweight birds. There are two reasons for this:
1. A three thousand mile migration to Africa including a third of it over desert, so no food. They will migrate in early September.
2. For the first time in their lives, they will soon have to catch their own fish and supplies from Monty and Glesni will come to an abrupt halt. If they fail to catch a fish in the first few days (bad weather for example), the excess body fat they are now storing will serve them well.
Think not of their gluttonous food screaming as greedy petulance, but rather a hoarding strategy that could well save their lives next month.

Week 19 With Glesni still around and continuing to help Monty with the fishing we’ve had a record-breaking week. As promised, here are the details.
Between them, Monty and Glesni have caught an incredible 37 fish this week – an all-time high for the Dyfi birds (the previous record being 32). Even Deri can’t be hungry this week! Monty caught 29 of these fish, with Glesni contributing another 8 including one enormous Flounder that Monty struggled to lift. Apart from a couple of smallish Flounders mid-week, all the fish have been a good size. Wednesday was the best fishing day with seven catches. The overall total now stands at 368 fish and with this amount of food on offer all four birds should be in tiptop condition to start their migrations when the time and weather conditions are right. (Vicky)

We've just had another intruder, and another two year old we think!
Ring number Blue CU2, left leg, a 2012 Scottish osprey, looks like a male. More info when we get it.
