News from their website

Birdcam news

May 20, 2014

We’re happy to announce that four eyasses hatched this past weekend. Sadly, one of the eyasses was found dead outside/below the nest box. We reviewed the birdcam footage and discovered that early on May 18 Mary Ellen was on alert and quickly left, and returned to, the nest box three times. We suspect this action was in possible defense of an owl. Mary Ellen knocked one of the eyasses out of the nest box during this activity. The three remaining eyasses are safe inside the nest box.

That is really a shame. That's much harder to take than a chick not being well after hatching & dying. :tissue: I remember a few years ago when the wind was so terrible shortly after some chicks hatched & we were holding our breath that they didn't get blown out of the nest. Fortunately, the lip was built up on this box since then, but I guess these freak accidents will happen. Thanks for sharing that info with us, Carolyn. :egg15:

It must be warm there today. They're getting some fresh air!

I'm having trouble deciding whether that's mom or dad with them. I think Mary Ellen has more specks on her bib.

Anybody who has an opportunity to watch Mary Ellen walk, pay attention to whether she's limping on her right leg. When she left the box to pick up food (I think from dad), I heard a cry from her that didn't sound like excitement at getting food for her babies. Actually, it sounded like she had just gotten hurt. I didn't catch her leaving with leftovers, but when she came back she was limping pretty badly on her right leg. I'm wondering if her talon was caught in the food & somehow the food also stuck to her mate. I didn't get a look at her foot & I hope its nothing but I got the impression that she can barely walk on it. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't know another reason for her to limp. :girlsad3:

She was preening on the perch bar and jumped over to the ledge and into the box. She even shuggled the kids and doesn't seem to be bothering her. Maybe it was like a stubbed toe...we all know what that's like. :gaaaaah:

Thanks for catching that video, Carolyn! Thank goodness, it doesn't look like a serious injury, but she didn't seem terribly graceful coming into the box (but maybe that's the way she usually does it). I saw her once she got back in the box & it seemed like she would kind of flinch at times when the kids snuggled up to her, but that could happen with a sore toe/talon too. I feel better about the situation now!
