Well hard as it is i have been watching redwing, and its not looking good. The reports more or less from RRP are the same as they always say.
WE ARE KEEPING AN EYE ON IT
BULLSH**

Quote:
Nora, at RRP forum posted
Bob ended an e-mail with "I know we would have opposition to pulling the eyas falcons" and as many years as he's worked with the falcons and knowing how much he does care about them, I have to respect his position. He's in a hard position between what he wants to do and what he's allowed to do in so many instances. He's definitely watching the situation, as is the guy from the plant and Amy and all are in communication. It's hard Shep, I know exactly where you're coming from. :-\

P.S. Some decisions are RRP's for things, but RRP also has guidelines they have to follow also.

Thanks KF...I guess you know I have been posting at RRP about this nest..posted a vid this morning over there..I believe we are seeing the same situation that we saw at Blackdog last year.

The words in "red"...are those YOUR words or words from RRP?...and who would be opposed to pulling the chicks? I don't know who would be against that...it makes no sense..

Red Wing

GSB nestbox had 5 eggs and only 1 hatch.
Red Wing nest is very close to GSB along the Mississippi River.
I snapped composite snips in a 1 hour period today - dont know if any value.
One chick did tip over as I watched.
The GSB chick also tips over.
Kitten, I have as much faith and trust in RRP as you do. :gaah:

I put a note on the RRP blog directed to Nora in support of sky's post.
I am not hysterical. I have no idea whats going on.
At GSB I suspect the spray they sprayed the nestbox with last June did harm there.
RRP will never tell us.

As of 1 pm one of the chicks is OUTSIDE mama's wing, the rest in front of her.

It looked to me as if 1 chick far side never got up - tried but couldnt - so didnt eat,
and it appeared to me like one chick was standing on another, who eventually got up.
Is that how you saw it?
I'd have to see this happen a few times to be concerned.
All chix dont eat at each feeding.

I forgot to post that it was Nora reporting, I'm going to go fix it right now.

are you talking about my vid? or were you watching the cam..in my vid, there was no feed. The concern is the 2 chicks that are struggling to turn over (this is abnormal) Occasionally, you will see a baby on its back, but it's usually able to right itself almost immediately..also, their "coloring" is all wrong. Dark patches are beginning to show on both.

This all started out just affecting 1 chick...and now, within days, its affecting 2 chicks. If it is parasites, then the other 2 will probably become infested as well.

Oh sky! LOL! :sum8: I saw mom in feed position and just assumed a feeding.
Yes I meant your video. WHY would dark patches appear?
There is absolutely no reason RRP couldnt go up there and check.
The falcons know the humans - they go up to band.
There is no reason to let this nest fail.

And it cant be normal for a chick to cry as much as that GSB chick does

I wish pics on cam were bigger ........ or do I .. ?

Even worse .. she got me in on it. bwahahahaha

sorry .. my silly side ... anyway .........

O this is really gross .. ewww

Nora posted this in RRP

Per Amy word for word!!!!!!!!!!

Went to box. It was hippoboscids. Cleaned all the young. I don't know that they will survive but this worked last year at Blackdog. You have my permission to put on forum.

Image

I googled hippoboscids

Stealth Flies On Birds: The Hippoboscids
flat insects that live as parasites on birds and mammals.

Thank GOODNESS....only time will tell if they got them in time. It may have been too late for the first chick, but maybe the other 3 will recover....I'm not sure if they are equipped for rehab. I hope the 2 really affected chicks will be strong enough to recover.

My guess is they still look horrible because they didn't clean them up...probably best and less traumatic to just allow the dried blood to fall off on its on. Hopefully they treated the nest.

Thanks for the coverage...I knew I would not go back to this cam until I knew what there plans were.

I'm going over to RRP now..

Not really...this is what we all do as viewers...ya learn what's normal and what's not and then raise a red flag...and heaven knows, Blackdog unfortunately taught us a lot about parasites last year!!!

OK..these chicks aren't out of the woods yet...but, I'm convinced the treatment gave at least 2 of the chicks a fighting chance. It was only a matter of time before they were infested as well...
