KING
I saw the bird at King.

June 27 Friday BLACK DOG
5 am I have watched 4 sleeping falcons, 1 perched, all 3 sleeping inside in standing position, not flopped.
I could not be sure if #4 was parent or fledgie.
Turns out to be parent. She was perched to the side facing in.
I very BRIEFLY saw all 4 kids inside. I wonder if one was flopped and I didnt see it.
They are just too cute! Glad all 4 were there with parent.
By 5.45 am all were outside the box - off cam

Isnt this adorable? Having a stare-off with a falcon! :egg14: :egg11:
Now that I think about it, the one male in the box did look a little pouty, sulking last nite.

From Nora on RRP June 27

Just saw this on FaceBook:

During fledge, it isn't uncommon for falcons to end up on the ground. Flying is instinctual but skill is learned. Like human infants learning to walk, falcons often have a few falls on the way. The photo below shows Dan from Xcel Energy Blackdog carrying tiercel (male) 02/D up on to a plant roof earlier today, where he'll be safe from any ground-based predators until he is ready to take off again.

KING Aug 5
Nora and skybluegirl, thanks for the ID's! I'm still not sure who the male is (*X/something, black over very faded red) but we have a partial ID on him and a full ID on the female. If sky doesn't post here, could someone thank her at BCAW for me, or pass this on? I found her photos but I don't have an account over there.

One tantalizing thought - most of the *X males were banded in 2008 or later. That doesn't seem like enough time to fade a band this badly. Could this be a male banded female? I'm hoping for a better year and a complete ID next year!

Amy

Wow! I sent a couple of photos off to Bob, but I'm guessing we are seeing juveniles and birds without a territory dispersing. One of the birds - the dark hooded bird that also has several dark body feathers - reminded me of Mary Ellen at GRE when she first began nesting there. If I remember right, Mary Ellen was a year old when she started nesting there. Maybe this bird is a sub-adult at 1.5 years?

I sent the photo to Bob to get his opinion. Frannie doesn't have eggs or young now, so she will be more loosely bound to her nest box this time of year and less likely to be on aggressive territorial defense. These birds could be sneaking through without her notice, or she may be vocalizing to chase them away. They are just passing through, so they probably scramble pretty quick if she starts kekking.
