Well, about 3 weeks old. That's about the time they get the explorers' fever! :egg21:

Good grief, when the camera turned back to the nest, I see they are all out.

Just watched one get back in, had a little trouble and needed to try a couple of times before successful.

Right now one chick is on the right side of the box on the outside with a parent brooding it, while the other parent is behind the box peeking down the side looking at them.

Too funny.

BANDING DAY IS TOMORROW...

FRIDAY, 5/2 AT APPROX 7:30AM.

Here's what Glenn posted to the group - take notice of the information regarding the friction tape he will be applying to the aluminum flashing at the far end of ledge to prevent early fledge.

The nestlings will be banded first thing tomorrow morning (I arrive at City Hall at 0700). We do this in the cool of morning because it can heat up on the ledge at this time of year and more accordingly be more stressful for the adults later in the day. Some ask why I do not use the "bucket" that is available for window washing and other building repairs. It takes a little while to get the bucket into position and we want to reduce our intrusion time as much as possible. Additionally, peregrines are extremely defensive when they have young in the nest and I fear one of them could shear off a wing on one of the bucket cables while focused on chasing me away from their young. Thus, I use a rope and get down on the ledge in a few seconds.

Why band birds? Bird banding is a highly regulated scientific practice of more than 100 years. We have learned a great deal about birds thanks to encounters with banded birds that are reported to the bird banding lab. (I receive an email from the lab when a FWS band is read. They are only now catching up to our use of VID bands and will soon receive reports of these too.) In the Bay Area I am interested in nest site tenacity, longevity, and dispersal distances of young from natal territory to breeding territory.

Bands do not hurt the birds or in any way put them at a disadvantage if properly applied. You may see me use a measuring device if I have a question about which size band to apply. Falcons are about 85% grown by the time they are three weeks old so adult size bands nicely fit nestlings this age.

While on the ledge, I will apply some friction tape to the aluminum flashing on the low end of the ledge to assuage viewer worries about premature fledging. As usual, I will clean the camera lens cover. --glenn@scpbrg

Thanks for sharing Glenn's info with us, mw! I hadn't thought of the cable problem using buckets, but cheers to Glenn for making the health & welfare of the falcons a priority! I will be getting ready for work at banding time, but I'm already thinking maybe I can get up early & get ready then watch a bit of the banding before I leave!

Nice catches of the little explorers, ljames! I especially like the captures of the whole family togther!
:flirty:

Parent brought in something to eat, but must not have been much as it was gone pretty quickly.
A chick found a scrap and worked on it for a while. Look at those little feet

Thanks mwplay for the info. Whew... thought I'd missed the banding.
I'll have to get a look at that friction tape to see what that looks like and does. Maybe they could use something like that at Richmond so they wouldn't have to use that mean cage. I know they have a big area but if it's cheap and easy to apply.

Well they are still eating and I'm closing down. I sure hope that they all get back in the box.
