mwplay, thanks for posting that..it was a fun read. I loved how she "climbed" the stairs...so I got curious and went looking for this bridge. Does this look like the right one?

Yep. That's it. Nest was on left tower, but opposite side, very top. So, the best viewing would be from near that plant where you see the 3 stacks.

Googling Fruitvale Bridge, then looking at images, I found tons of pictures! Here's something from 5/24 with the 3:

Crow/Raven nests.

When Hiko & Haya first took the site, I believe there was a big battle. If I remember correctly, there are nests on all 4 sides (left/right towers, both sides). If you look at your picture, you see what looks like glass, then right below that, a platform area - well, that's where the nests are. Also, I think they set up a nest (crows), under the main bridge span.

Okay, more on Hiko & his family.

Barbara posted the following on SF Yahoo group:

Photos of the Fruitvale family can be found at:

in the album Peregrine Falcons 2014.

Two of the photos show Bridgette (misspelled last time) climbing the stairs and her encounter with a pigeon and a dove. Pigeons and doves inhabit the lower levels of the bridge, but are seldom bothered by the peregrines. They usually take their food far from the bridge. There is a nearby grainery and shoreline that provide most of their prey.

The flying young bird is Owen - he went after Hiko on numerous occasions looking for food. Hiko usually responded by flying away, although one time he held his ground, yelled at Owen and shooed him off with a couple of wing flaps.

As of yesterday Bridgette finally made it to the nest ledge and then to the roof of the bridge tower (175ft) so she is well on her way to conquering the skies.

Thanks so much for posting the info on Hiko and his family. I hate bridge nests but it looks like the young have found a way to adapt. Little Bridgette is obviously very smart, must take after her mother. :egg21:

Just kidding, whenever I think of Hiko, I think of him getting knocked off the ledge.

Those photos are wonderful.

Thanks, Kitten. I used to live in California & one of my complaints when I lived there was that all the regulations tied your hands as far as trying to get something done. I wish Espie & her family a lot of luck.
