The camera is back up . I believe that this is Halo and Beatrix. Halo has fledged and is now returned to the ledge to keep her sister company. I actually think I saw her take off and return just a few minutes ago too. I bet Beatrix is the baby. She had more white on her than the others the last time I saw her, so she is just not ready yet.

All 4 are now fledged. Flying well, still working on landings.

Thanks for all the great reports. I do still read the forum sometimes. It's a shame the cam went down right at fledging. Saw two on the ledge today, have no idea really which two, but thought maybe Bolt and Halo. Well I cannot look after them anymore but I know they are in good hands with so many on watch, and of course Clara and FC.

Off topic, but related to Clara/San Jose.

Here's an update from Barbara W. regarding Hiko's (2007 SJ Hatch) family, posted to the SF Yahoo Forum:

Fruitvale Bridge Family

As of today I think we can call the Fruitvale Bridge peregrines, successfully fledged. The bridge is the only tall structure in the area and it is important that these young use the bridge and that they stay high. A marker for us is the top of the drawspan. The drawspan is kept at a height half way up the towers and provides a surface where food will be delivered to the young.

The birds have been named Owen, Zeus, and Bridget. Owen came out of his egg flying. He fledged at 8:15am on Saturday (Day 40) and before the day was over, had made 7 or 8 trips between the towers, all at a good height. He has been flying great ever since and today tried a stoop on his mother, Tremaine. It was fun to see the realization come over him of what his wings are all about. He flexed them to change the angle of flight and then pulled them in. It was a very short stoop, but it was exciting to see.

Zeus fledged later in the day at 10:45am. He landed on the tower at the top level of the drawspan. He is not too keen to fly, and spent some time in a couple of the surrounding trees. After the second tree incident where he was mobbed by some ravens he made a beeline for a high place on the bridge and has been there since. When he does fly he does very well, staying high and on the bridge. He has achieved the roof as well as the nest ledge and is getting his landings under control.

Bridget has had her predicaments, three to be exact. She fledged at 6:30pm on Monday (day 42), and immediately had both her mother and Owen trying to help. She missed the top of the drawspan and landed on the rail bed instead. She stayed there for two days and then decided to fly. Unfortunately she lost a lot of altitude and landed on one of the bridge towers at a very low level. She is very smart and found the stairs. She climbed 3 flights of stairs to get back to the rail bed level. She could have kept going but chose to fly instead, and again lost altitude and landed on the other tower below the rail bed level. She immediately took the stairs (2 flights) to the rail bed level and stayed put for a while. Last night she decided to fly again (trying to get to the top of the drawspan) and her brother Owen tried to help. She ended up just below her landing point hanging on to the side of the bridge like a moth. She was there in the dark when I left and thankfully on the rail bed when I arrived this morning. Midday she finally flew to the top of the drawspan. She can do it if no one interferes so I’m hoping she flies when no one else is around. She just needs a little more time, but will soon be able to keep up with her brothers.

Since all three birds are now on top of the drawspan, fledge watch is over.

If you are in the area there should be some great flying in the coming weeks. They are most active in the early morning – before 10am and again in the afternoon – after 3pm, and in to the evening but of course peregrines especially young ones can fly at any time.

Barbara
