So sad. I believe we lost Kira, the female, but not sure. Michelle put up such a good fight. So much so that the GHO left its catch behind. Michelle is not leaving her last baby alone today. Rest peacefully little one.

The Kentucky biologists left the dead chick in the box til they'd all fledged.
I guess they know best .. but

He got back in, he just literally dove back in! lol

Amy, RRP emailed me they will - NOT - take the risk of going down to remove Kira.
There is risk to both Carson and human.

I personally expect Carson to - FLUDGE - sooner than - WE - are ready.
You all see how eager he is to be OUTSIDE! He's a FALCON!
He tried REPEATEDLY June 10 to perch like Mom!

I am SO GLAD RRP put that platform between the 2 perchs!
I think Carson is using that to help him jump back inside.
Now they need that fake grass covering - this wood looks too slippery
Its a beautifully crafted box for a human!

1.20 pm Carson slipped off and went down.
I am NOT worried. He knows his wings are to fly / balance.
He's been using them. He is FAR FAR better off down there.

June 12 Update from RRP concerning Carson

Carson, the remaining falcon at Great Spirit Bluff, jumped from his nest box this afternoon. He was 30 days old, or roughly eight days younger than the youngest age we might expect fledge. Although we treated the box and had a fan blowing, we think the black flies probably became overwhelming, causing him to bolt.

He landed in the brush and appears to be fine. We've seen Michelle and Newman take care of young below the bluff previously, so we're monitoring the situation remotely. We don't want to try to catch him and put him back on the box, since chances are high he would jump again. We also don't want to drive him deeper into cover, which could make it harder for Michelle and Newman to reach him. We'll intervene if we think it is necessary, but for now, we are leaning on the lesson we first learned in 2013: peregrine parents will find and care for their young even below the bluff.

As watchers (and rehabbers) know, this has been a tough year for blackflies/gnats, with many areas experiencing record hatches. We will continue to reach out to experts on the subject as we deal with the problem.

I just heard kid. it is well and has healthy lungs. almost appeared as if it flew. Peter and I both listened . i know it did not but sounded as if. it did. sure hope they can feed it. but it can eat insects

Even after carson fludged she tried to feed it - chupping

this is perfectly normal behavior. the chick is whole and fluffy. she is almost protecting it. we do not see this too often but every bird reacts differently. I remember when chick died at San Jose, the chicks protected it .
maybe if it had died of natural causes, it would be different but it was attacked when Michelle was not in box.

michelle was where Carson was today and she has been on the cliff a lot.
