Not looking good a Sequoia Sutton nest. :tissue: Per Eagleholic
March 18, 2015
"It has been a very confusing time this year at the Sutton Sequoyah nest. While eagle mom has soldiered on incubating two eggs, dad was just not around much. Yesterday, one egg appeared to start hatching with chatters noting they saw movement and an egg tooth, and then today, mom left the eggs for a bit (which she needed to do periodically) and dad (pretty sure it was dad by chatters) came in and removed the apparently hatching egg out of the nest bowl. The camera has remained zoomed in, so no confirmation on what the eagle did with the egg. Mom reappeared and began incubating the remaining egg as she is as I write this now, but it did look like the other eagle came back trying get at the remaining egg. Mom eagle did not let that happen. Some say they believe they have seen evidence that the remaining egg may also be hatching. Some theorize that ‘dad’ may not be the father of the eggs and so is destroying them as they hatch. This is a phenomenon that has been noted before with eagles. Or that the hatch wasn’t successful. I don’t have enough information to speculate, but something is sure going on. The picture shown here is the eagle rolling the egg out of the nest bowl. It has been a tough year for this pair and those who watch and my condolences go out to all."

So sad...I've been trying to keep up with this nest...I really don't think this is the original male.
Reminds me of when this happened at turtle bay...

VIAN, Oklahoma - Cameras set up on a bald eagle nest near Vian in the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge captured a heartbreaking incident this week.
A bald eagle had laid two eggs on the nest last month. As the eggs began to hatch, something unexpected happened. A male bald eagle picked up one of the eggs and dropped it out of the nest. The female then abandoned the nest and the remaining egg.

Visit the live bald eagle nest cameras here.

Here's what Sutton Center Director of Conservation Dr. Steve Sherrod wrote about what happened:

"Yesterday, March 18, was one of perplexing behavior by the eagles nesting at SNWR. Accounts captured on the cameras and witnessed by video observers show visible, independent movement in one or both eggs, with an apparent yellow blob beyond the top of one egg in the nest. The female that was incubating became upset, was vocalizing, left the nest, and returned with the male. At least one of the eggs appeared misshapen at that time, as if either hatching or partially broken. One of the adults then appears to pick up the misshapen egg in its beak and drop the egg over the edge of the nest. Incubation of the single egg left in the nest then continued, but today, March 19, the remaining egg has appeared unattended for over 6 hours at the time of this writing and will likely no longer be viable.

I have studied and maintained raptors for much of my life and have either hatched in captivity or have overseen captive hatching of nearly 300 bald eagle eggs and many more hundreds of peregrine, gyrfalcon, and prairie falcon eggs. Unfortunately, I cannot say with absolute confidence just exactly what happened yesterday with this bald eagle pair, but I have a reasonable idea. It is likely that at least one if not both 2014-2015 Sequoyah bald eagle eggs were hatching with almost completely developed chicks in the process of turning or rotating within and breaking out of the shell(s). Both captive breeding and wild breeding peregrine falcon adults have been observed, in rare cases, to pick at hatching eggs with their beaks, sometimes appearing to “assist” the young out of the egg shells. Usually, no “help” for the hatching chicks is exhibited or needed. On very rare occasions, adult falcons have been observed to continue picking at the cracked shells and actually into the hatching chicks, so that the latter are either killed or eaten by the adult. Older (about 2 week) peregrine chicks have been consumed by adult falcons in very rare instances as captured by nest cameras.

During the hatching process the chicks often, although not always, vocalize. A chick that is having trouble completing the rotational turn during hatching or in freeing itself from the shell halves can vocally protest rigorously. Also, a hatching chick that is sickly can remain inside, weak, and silently pass, or can protest vocally while continuing to struggle. This is especially true when the chick has a yolk sac infection, often resulting from bacteria invaded through pores in the egg shell. Such infections are usually fatal for the chick. Adults might react to the complaining chick by trying to brood it, feed it, or by eventually killing it, sometimes feeding the deceased chick to the other chicks in the nest or sometimes discarding the individual out of the nest. Such behavior might function to actually spread the infection or might serve as conservation of energy for the family group. If the second Sequoyah bald eagle egg ends up deserted, it could possibly be infected as well. We do know that when eggs are warm from incubation, and an adult must get off the eggs to eat or otherwise departs during a rain storm, the cold rain on top of dirty, but warm eggs, facilitates invasion by bacteria on the shell. (For that reason, we always clean eggs in captivity with a warmer solution than the temperature of the incubated egg). Without tests for disease in the deceased eggs/chicks, or without ability to hear chick vocalizations we can only speculate about what might have happened in this instance at Sequoyah, but the preceding scenario is likely."

3-23-15 Today our cams went live on the Dollywood nest of non-releasable Bald Eagles "Independence" and "Franklin."
Here's a video of some special moments today as the eagles are preparing their nest for another season. Watch, learn, & chat at http://www.eagles.org/

Very sad for the River View Farm nest ....... and the Vian nest ...... a few days ago an Eagle suddenly showed up on the Sooner Lake nest and laid an egg. Has not incubated it though ... flew in and out a few times the nest day and there the egg sits.

The tornados in OK last week destroyed 4 nests with chicks in the Sand Springs area. I was thinking that perhaps this eagle had it's nest destroyed right when it was ready to lay eggs ... and thus needed somewhere to 'drop' her egg. I guess we'll never know.

PS ... shouldn't River Farms be listed in the Northeast eagle page? It's in Virginia. . . ? Just a thought! :)

Sooner....thanks for the explanation...I wondered where this egg came from..

Very sad to hear about the loss of nests with chicks...just horrible...

About River Farm...debated where it should go..we don't have a mid-Atlantic category..and since VA sided with the South during the Civil War....that's where it went...

AEF Dollywood - big excitement. From their FB page:
Cam is live now http://www.eagles.org/Cams/DollywoodNest.html

"5-15-15: AFTERNOON UPDATE! This morning, May 15th) the AEF made the decision to visit Independence and Franklin's nest to perform a physical inspection of the eggs, because they were so long overdue from their expected hatch dates. There were no signs of pips or chirping. The eggs were then "candled" to check for development and growth within the eggs, and they were both confirmed to be undeveloped and infertile.

Independence and Franklin still get to be parents this year, however! They were given and are now "fostering" an Eaglet that hatched from an egg produced by captive Bald Eagle breeding pair "Isaiah" and "Mrs. Jefferson." The egg was found on the ground in Eagle Mountain Sanctuary in March.
Despite the AEF's despairing belief that the egg missed a very vital incubation period, it was still transferred to their incubation room with high hopes. It miraculously hatched 36 days later! Independence and Franklin have thus far accepted it as their own.

The AEF wishes to monitor the nest and also troubleshoot the "overhead" cam which tends to go down often. The plan is to go live again on Monday morning.
Thanks to DragonLainey for providing these first 2 videos! More to come, along with photos.

Sunday September 20, 2015 - The Eagles have returned to their nest! The new camera monitors the eagle nest 24 hours a day including night vision. Keep in mind the pair of eagles will not be sitting in their nest 24/7 but they will begin to prepare the nest for new eaglets in 2016.
to view the actual time lapse video showing the moment of arrival when they returned to the nest!
