:girlsad3: OMG I looked yesterday and parent was in the spot I had been seeing them. I just assumed they were covering them.
I just went thru yesterdays stills, and they were removed then.

SGB - Thanks for the link with additional information on the Pawnee nest. I'll bet the chicks died from the cold. So many times when I checked on this nest, both parents were in the box on top of the chicks. I had thought that one parent was trying to get the other parent to leave. But if it were really cold, then both were probably trying to keep the chicks warm.

It's so sad that the chicks are no longer with us.

On a brighter note, the Nebraska kestrels are doing great! There are two males and two females, and they should start fledging in the next 5 days or so.

Kestrels starting again before finishing what they’ve got?
Posted by: Joel Jorgensen May 26, 2015 in Nongame Bird Blog Comments Off on Kestrels starting again before finishing what they’ve got?

If you been checking in on our American Kestrels you already know they had a successful nesting season. The adult kestrels appear to have successfully fledged two female and two male young kestrels over the weekend, although one male remains in the nest box. Hopefully, he takes his first flight soon and leaves his wooden prison (note: about 30 minutes after publishing this blog post, he bolted). What came as a surprise over the weekend is the adults seem as though they can’t wait to get going on brood #2. On Sunday, the female came into the nest box and laid an egg while the kestrel chicks were still in the nest box! I thought one egg may just be an anomaly, but now there are two new eggs in the nestbox, as can be seen in the screenshot, below.

KF - Thanks for the news about the Nebraska kestrels starting a second clutch by laying eggs before all the chicks in the first clutch had fledged! I hadn't even noticed, although in checking back through my posts of fledges I saw that first one egg and then a second egg appeared. Silly me, I was focusing only on the number of chicks left in the nest.

Nebraska (2nd Clutch) - 3 eggs as of this morning!

Hawk Mountain - I don't know what's going on here. There should be hatches by now, but I haven't seen any (of course the fact that the adults are always in the nest doesn't help).

Hawk Mountain - 1st hatch at last! (I was ready to give up on having any of the 5 eggs hatch.)

Hawk Mountain - Still just one hatch here.

Boise - All the chicks are still at home, but I expect them to start fledging at any time now.

Boise - 1st chick successfully fledged yesterday morning! In this picture from later in the day yesterday, the female is feeding the 4 chicks left in the nest box.

Hawk Mountain - Still just one chick in the nest.

from fb

And then there was one!
Early this morning, three more of our KestrelCam chicks fledged, and began exploring the outside. They all flew successfully, and are now hanging out in trees nearby. The adult male is keeping a close eye on all of them as I type this.
Only one young male remains in the KestrelCam nestbox now - I am sure he'll gather his courage and make the leap soon!

Thanks for the news about the recent fledges at the Boise nest, Priscilla. The last chick fledged yesterday, but the kids are still visiting the nest, sometimes even spending the night. This was earlier this morning . . .

Hawk Mountain

:eggsad: I hope nothing's wrong with the chick. Lately it always appears to be flipped over on its back, and I've even seen the female feed it while it was on its back. (The female was pretty rough with the chick when it was newly hatched, and I'm hoping that it wasn't injured during that time.)

Yesterday . . .

Today . . .

 I had been worried about this little chick as it was always on its back. But today it finally got turned over and even sat up for a bit.
