Mysterious situation: No eggs for Bella & Amadeus found... :furious:
Quote:
Ernst » Sa Apr 09, 2016 22:58:10

The 19th of March is in Bocholt for many years the day of the 1st egg-laying of the peregrine falcons in the water tower. Not thus this year! Although the behaviour of the peregrine falcons was "normal during the last weeks, I found on the 19th of March still no egg in the box.

In Saturday, 2nd of April, so 14 days later, I was again on top in the box and expected the full 4th Gelege like during the last years at that time. I was horrified and absolutely helpless when I found no egg in the box again! Also the nesting hollow had disappeared! Now after the dismantling enforced by the pigeon breeders of the inside camera which allowed a Webcam supervision of the box inside up to the last year all speculations are possible of course as it could come to this situation without eggs.

Because the peregrine falcons showed a normal behaviour after my impression during the last weeks, such an extreme delay of egg laying is not to be accepted for me. Nevertheless, I hope for this improbable case that last week a late egg-laying has begun which I cannot check, however, at present, because for more than 1 week the key has disappeared for the water tower! He is ordinarily in the walled, lockable key small box for which I own a key, below in the water tower beside the entrance. Employees of the public utilities and different operators of transmitters on top on the water tower have a key for this small box to reach the tower (and also to the peregrine falcon box a little secure only).

I may not think in an other possibility which could explain the absence of the eggs (still) that because criminal pigeon holders or bird of prey breeders have stolen the valuable eggs - if these were laid between the 19th of March and 2nd of April - about Mittelsmänner with access authorisation to the tower from the nesting box...

Do you have any idea how old Bella is?

This will be the second year we have no eggs at the Indianapolis Market Tower nest. KathyQ will be 18 in May. Sesenta, her son and mate for two years, continues to stay with her and they bow to one another to continue the bond.

I was asked: "Is the age of the Bocholter peregrine falcons maybe responsible for the absence of the eggs?"

The pair appeared in the beginning of 2008 without human closing in the water tower and started to court there on top on a wall ledge and to copulate. Premature Bella was then only 1 year old as was to be recognised by the plumage unambiguously. It is a year in 2007 and therefore in her 9th year. At that time Amadeus, her partner till this day, has been 3 years old 2 or, today in the 10th or 11th year.

At this age peregrine falcons ordinarily still gather boy. For it there are in the literature many examples. The age of the Bocholter peregrine falcons probably does not seem to be responsible for the absence of the eggs.

Up to now Bella and Amadeus since 2008 have drawn up yearly always several boy, fully-fledgedly a total of 27, on an average 3.4 became p.a. Still last year 4 Jung falcons became fully-fledged - no sign of missing vitality of the parents!

The 1st egg laid Bella always - as far as famously - between the 14th and 19th of March.

Thanks for giving me Bella's age info, Ferenz. I agree that age is not a factor here.

What a cutie pie.
:loveheart2:

I saw a parent bring in prey and was hoping the next shot would be chick/chicks coming out on the platform, but they didin't (smart).

PS: it's too ridiculous that we cannot watch the inside cam of these beautiful little falcons growing up.
