:15heartbeat: It's okay bonbon! The owl never lands on the nest. I noticed Rachel is showing signs of fatigue during the video when she attempts landings. She even lands slightly below on the side of the nest and you can see her head pop up. As hypervigilant as she has been since the attacks, I assume she is not getting proper rest. She is really going all out. Last night Bailey was changing position in the nest and Rachel pounced on her immediately! Caught herself, but poor Bailey hunkered down and stayed in that position. Rachel is acting on every sound and movement. Bailey is 46 days old today and here is what one of the chatters with long experience @ this site said of Rachel's age:

She's been nesting here since at least 2011 -- probably is the Osprey who was also on the nest since 2008, and they are about four years old before starting nesting and rearing chicks, so she's most likely about 13 or 14.

EDIT :15heartbeat: And this is what a mod went on to say about Bailey's age:

Rachel truly is a warrior queen! Trust nature, trust ospreys!

Unfortunately, the yellow jackets (wasps!) are back too, this morning. Poor Bailey, what else does she has to endure? She is only 46 days old...

Little Bailey isn't ready for fledge yet, it takes about 10 more days. Her flight feathers aren't completely developed, she needs much more wingercizing and helicoptering to train her muscles.

:blinksun: That is a long way off with the fear each night brings for me! Not to mention what an eagle or yellow jackets can do during the day ...

So true, Swin... gonna be a LONG 10 days.... Rachel's gotta be exhausted!
Interesting - yesterday, had cam up and Rachel left nest for almost an hour; she didn't look wet when she returned, maybe she went to relax in the shade somewhere; Bailey looked like she was asleep, maybe Steve was close but hidden.
Relieved to see that all looked well this morning; always hold my breath when I turn the cam on in the morning.

 :buzzybee: The wasp nest was removed from under the nest to a different location! Explore is having some troubles with chat that is not the norm here:

Hi osprey-watchers: we are temporarily freezing this chat board to give our lovely chat moderators a break, considering the recent events on this camera. We will turn the board back on again tomorrow when Dr. Rob Bierregaard joins us for a live Q&A! We'll be sharing the details of this live chat later today at blog.explore.org - we'll be asking people to post their questions for Dr. B in the comments section of the blog.

Looking forward to what Dr. B. will say about Rachel's newly learned techniques to protect Bailey! :15heartbeat:

:sum9: Glad they came through another night! I am unable to find the video with Dr. B.! Guess they are still processing. This is from Explore Mod:

Thanks for joining us for today's chat! A video highlight will be available as soon as we process it - we will feature it in a comment on this chat board, but you can stay tuned for updates on blog.explore.org

I did read someone saying Dr. B. said Rachel was attacking Bailey after the GHO attack ... can't wait to hear what he actually has to say about all the events we have witnessed here!

7:50am
All is well on the nest.
Rachel is on duty at her usual spot - on the end of the perch. Bailey is watching her and looks like she is considering joining her.... she has approx. a week to go until fledge-age. Sure hope her feathers are ok to fly. Sometimes Bailey's left wing (some of the feathers) looks a bit out of whack - other times the wing looks perfect.
What do you think?

:loveheart:

Added 7:56am: Chat is indicating that Bailey has been stung by the wasps (again??)?????

Just after 10 AM, Bailey was being swarmed by wasps and he decided to fledge:

He tried to land on some low branches but missed.
Image

The last sight of him was falling below the branches upside down.
Image

A rescue team is looking for him now. I could hear those little "duck sounds" that Bailey sometimes makes, so hopefully he is ok.

Good news! Dr. Bierregaard posted this a few minutes ago:
Quote:
OK, here's the latest. I just heard from Eric. He has Bailey safe and sound. She was on the ground and appears uninjured. The first thing we're going to try is putting Bailey up in the Boathouse nest. This is the easiest route to take. I believe Steve and Rachel will shift their feeding operations over to that nest when they hear Bailey begging for food. Alternatives are putting up an alternate platform near the current nest or climbing up and spraying the wasp nest. Eric can't do that now because he's alone on the Island and needs help to get a ladder up that high.
So, stay calm, everybody. We're doing all we can.

Link to the boathouse camera for those who don't have it:

Baily was put on the Boathouse nest and some 20 minutes later Mom (I guess) checked in on him/her. Later parent returned with fish and eventually started feeding. All is well :girlyes:
