Looking at cam now. Kids are uncovered and both eggs visible. I can't tell if that's poop on that egg, or if maybe it was a failed hatch? I tend to lean towards poop.

So, Clara was a juvie in brown plumage in 2005 when she was first spotted in San Jose. First year she nested was in 2007. So, this is her 10th year nesting.

That's a great shot of Clara and FC beak to beak.
:loveheart2:

I saw the chicks uncovered yesterday with mom and dad both sitting on the wall and was alarmed that they were uncovered after only a few days, so I looked up the temp and felt a little better about it and saw today was forecast for 91 I think.

I hear ya bev., there is nothing worse than seeing one of the chicks get left out of the feed because they are much younger and smaller than the others. So better to have fewer hatch and survive than a little one suffer and die for sure.

Thanks for the info on Clara, mwplay. Not a spring chicken, but still young enough.

FC arrived with a pathetically small piece of prey and I was thinking, I sure hope this isn't dinner/lunch. He went to the box wanting to feed the chicks and they stood up and that's when I noticed their little crops. I was like thank goodness they have eaten well recently. Clara just watched him do his thing. She is so tolerant of his antics.

He just wants to be near his babies, but it's just as well that Clara is in charge.

I think a broken egg....

Late hatch.... they just announced it on forum. I see the broken shell...

I don't see new chick unless it is under Clara.

They will be posting a video. I'll attach a link.

And....

I'm just posting a warning... This might be hard to watch - because we don't know what will happen. Glenn S has stated several times he has gone to a few nests for banding where there was an apparent "age" difference (like 1 week). I'm going to keep optimistic and will know whatever happens will be for the best.

Here's what Glenn S just posted:

Actually, we need to be thinking in terms of the number of days after the oldest sibling: 7. The oldest is so much bigger than the newly hatched young now that it will be challenged when trying to eat. Remember that a newly hatched chick can barely hold up its head and tires quickly. The older chicks will snatch offered food. When all are nearly the same size it usually works out. With one so young it will be hard for it to compete for food. As I said earlier--I have seen it work out fine for the young one when entering nests to band and finding one that is a full week younger than three other siblings. We'll just have to wait and see. If mom is not very deliberate about getting food into the young one, this will be over in a couple of days and may be hard to watch. We will hope for the best!! --glenn@scpbrg

I looked away of course & some kind of feed just went on. I caught the very end - last bite. I have NOT seen the 3rd chick yet.

Honestly, until I see the video I just have a weird feeling about this....

ETA: No posts coming through right now after that "feed". Makes me even more wigged out.

1:19pm - FC just arrived. Looking at empty egg. Picking around it. I still only see 2. If 3 is there, he's buried in chick , or he didn't make it, or maybe it was a non-viable egg that burst after heatwave we had.

And honestly, not to be disgusting, but I wondered if the earlier feed was the body.

No one on kids now. 2 older ones are moving around a bit and I see nothing.

Here's the video they just posted.

When I first saw the broken egg, I thought the older ones looked somewhat damp. My first reaction was broken egg, then I saw the email come in. Clara was adamant about trying to get the older chicks away from the newly cracked egg.

Until I see a 3rd head clearly, I'm not sure if we have 3?

At about the 3:15 point in video, you can see something on the egg. But it also looks like it is the tip of the egg, not the center of the egg. Maybe someone else can see something I can't?

How odd if this was indeed a hatch. Hopefully, it wasn't. Well, there is nothing we can do about it if there is another chick but hope for the best.

I must be blind. I can't see the 3. I do see a broken/cracked egg, but honestly, it looks somewhat scrambled/thick yolk to me.

Unfortunately, this cam isn't all that clear and #3 may very well be hidden under the 2 older ones, or behind them.

ETA: I slowed Loza's video down and I think I can see #3. He's buried underneath and you just see beak & eyes... at the 10 second mark, I think. He's going to be so much smaller than the other 2. Wow. Going to be hard to watch this.....

I haven't been able to watch the video yet as it is processing, but I thought I only saw 2.

Around 12:48pm PT, there was something fed to the kids. I caught the very end of it. I literally worked in a different pc window for a few minutes and when I came back, saw the last bite or two fed. I really wonder if little one didn't make it.

Unfortunately at this site, there have been a few losses and have seen the body of the deceased fed to the surviving siblings.
