A large falcon is sitting on the nestbox perch in Manchester..... :loveshow: Well, now he/ she has jumped over to the nestbox ledge, and down into the nestbox... Back out and up on the ledge again.....

At Union County, New Jersey, I found a banded peregrine hanging around the nestbox (which looks more like a doghouse mounted on a piece of dilapidated plywood). Anyway it was happily pebble picking, and beak scraping as it checked out the nestbox. It had a black, or a black/ green band.

:buzzybee: Union county, New Jersey again: The falcon is on some steps behind the nest box. The cam operator has zoomed in the cam to get a better view....

:omg

Definitely a "Viewer Discretion Advised" video...but certainly explains this pic I took on that same day (which I never posted)

Image

Took me forever to figure out what it was. At first I was afraid it was one of the kids (they've been returning), injured by a hawk or something. I think the cam operator feared the same as s/he zoomed/panned, etc...During one of the zooms it became clear it was not a falcon, but until I saw that vid, I had no clue where it came from. I couldn't stick around, but it is no longer there (that I know of)..

(unfortunate pigeon is on its back-probably headless. Pointy things you see are the poor thing's feet)

WOW...that was some vid...if I had been watching live, I would have been freaking out!!

So much for falcons only catching their prey in mid-air! A saying around here goes that a pigeon could sit on a falcon's head & be safe as long as it didn't fly off! Even more surprising was that it was an adult, not a juvie. :girlcrazy: Thanks, Kitten!
