Falcon chick gets a lift back to its nest at Eckert plant

LANSING - A young peregrine falcon was back in its nest atop the Lansing Board of Water & Light's Eckert power plant today after a mishap left it temporarily grounded.

Someone at the power station near downtown Lansing spotted the six-week-old chick, "Diamond," on the ground near a high-voltage area and called Dina Maneval, a BWL accountant who has championed the birds, BWL spokesman Steve Serkaian said.

Maneval, aka the "Falcon Lady," returned the uninjured chick to the nest 10 stories up.

Diamond and her three siblings were banded and examined by experts from the state Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State University and Potter Park Zoo on May 25, Serkaian said. Their parents, "Eckert" and "Viper," are teaching them how to hunt so they can fend for themselves once they leave the nest entirely.

"This particular chick needs a few more lessons," Serkaian said.

BWL established a nesting site for peregrine falcons in 2004 in an effort to help preserve the species. Since then, 52 eggs have been laid, 27 eggs have hatched and 20 chicks have successfully left the nest, BWL officials said.

awe no. i have so loved watching this site this year. I had to take a step back as i had to monitor my own sites. I am hoping there is not a new female

I will keep cam up with mine to try and see who comes around.
