The resident falcon pair at the Burlington-Bristol Bridge nesting box have single silver federal bands on their right legs. Each left leg is un-banded.

I wanted to share some info that our new member, mto823, shared with me!!

With Mike's permission:

He has taken over the falcon duties on the Tacony-Palmyra (TPB) and Burlington-Bristol Bridges (BBB)~the nest you see at the bottom of the Palmyra cam page. He's participated in the bandings over the past several years, and in his words: "I have been face-to-feather with the parents and chicks."

Some info on the birds:

TPB female has a silver band and a green/black band.
BBB male only has the silver band, and is very docile. He quietly watches us work from a few feet away. Per Kathy:
Band number is xx06-8060x. Depending on the missing numbers (esp. at the end), this male came from the Walt Whitman Br OR the PA-NJ Turnpike Bridge, both in 2004. So he's 11 years old now (as of May 2015). He sure is cool, calm and collected!

About the Burlington Bristol Bridge nest (BBB):

The Burlington nesting box is at least ten years old, and located inside the Bristol (PA) tower, near the top of the bridge. We made some repairs to the wood and added fresh stone last fall. There are no artificial lights near the box, so it will be dark at night. It is open on the east side, so we get daylight.

There is also a nesting box on top of the Burlington-Bristol Bridge NJ tower, which they have never used for nesting. It is out in the open, and more exposed to weather and other predators.

A couple of pics of the BBB nest in 2015:

The male is watching perched on the netting, while the female circled. The Delaware River is below, and New Jersey is visible across the river.

Thanks to Mike for all this great information...I am sure as the season progresses, we will have tons of questions for him!!!

Bev,
Yes, the Palmyra camera was replaced with a higher resolution model. We hope it will give us better views of the eggs, since they are usually laid where the camera is pointed. The chicks usually run to the inside corner when people are nearby. The plan is to replace the other camera with a new pan-tilt-zoom camera and locate it where it will look into the box from a different angle. This will not take place until summer (at the earliest).

The new fixed camera can be remotely zoomed, so once we have eggs, I will ask to have the picture left in a close-up mode, if that is preferred by the board community.
Mike
