I am solution-oriented.
That box has not been able to fledge many young.
Its dangerous. there is no play area - and NO room for a mis-step
Rocky slid off the ledge and way down
If they autopsy I suspect they will find somethng internal
She had not done enuf wing exercising to break a fall
The box needs to be moved - or this will keep happeneing

It is my understanding that they fledged 3 chicks last year from this location. I do believe it was with a different female. The current female is very young. It is just a shame.

I imagine the biologists will look carefully at everything. With this being the inaugural year for the cam, I am sure they were hoping for a better outcome, especially knowing the world is watching.

From the AGFD FB page.

"After receiving a positive examination earlier this afternoon, the downtown Phoenix peregrine chick was returned to the nest. Unfortunately, it appears the trauma of the fall, combined with the unseasonably high temperatures, proved too much for the chick, which has died.
Earlier the chick underwent a physical examination, was hydrated and underwent X-rays to check for any broken bones. It was found to be well enough to be returned to the nest. It's likely the chick succumbed to an internal injury that was not evident during its exam earlier today.
We wish to thank viewers around the world that came along with us on this uncharted journey. It is our hope that, despite the outcome, you gained an appreciation for our wildlife and the many challenges they face. Participating in an unfiltered view of wildlife offers an unpredictable glimpse into the real-time joy and drama facing these peregrines, 40 percent of which don’t survive their first year."

For awhile before Rocky died, some lady on chat (and a few others joining in) were disgusted with Dad as they perceived him to be trying to mate with Rocky. I became so riled up, I jumped into chat for the first time ever and wrote a note on how falcons mate. I am always amazed when people who are ignorant on a matter try to suck the air from the room in defense of what they believe.

Good for you, SWINWK! So they took something as precious as a father trying to help & then mourning for his daughter & turned it into something dirty. :furious:

:tissue: OMG I just got home and read this,
I'm going to say this & hope you all don't get mad.
They should have KEPT the baby for a day or so no matter if there wasn't anything broken they should have kept her.
Anyone that knows anything knows when you fall that far there is always a possibility of internal problems. I just don't understand them there.
Well I'm done and again I'm sorry if I spoke out of turn.

RIP little one you gave it your all.

I wish they'd move the box to their roof where chicks'd have a play area instead of a sheer drop off. Yeah I agree they shuda kept her inside where its cool for a day or two. It was 115 degrees June 4 and maybe hotter inside that box.

Dad was trying desparately to save his baby.
It was hard to watch but I couldnt leave him.

Don't know whether this link will work, it's pics taken by BOG(or building) soon after the chick fell:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater

I was watching this cam almost all afternoon; one thing that I just can't get over is DAD;
he was right there when the little one was returned and looking back, his behavior (IMO) definitely showed that he knew Something Is Not Right immediately.
I've never witnessed anything like this before 'live,' it's so hard not to attach human emotions to the birds. This Dad just seemed to be in a panic and helpless over his little one... the way he stayed with his little one so long - in the stifling (114-115F) heat... just broke my heart.

I won't forget this for a long time.

Thanks for all of your insightful and beautiful comments.
(You're right - some of the chat comments were ridiculous.)

There was a post on the chat from the Arizona Game and Fish Department

For those wondering, at the examination yesterday it was determined the nestling was a male. AZGFD went to the nest site this morning to see what the parents might doing. In the hour that was spent looking, the female was seen perched on a high-rise close by at around 9:30 am. Another bird was seen perched later but was too far away to get an ID on which adult it was.

thanks for the great, but very sad, coverage today...

I didn't have time to check in last evening, but did first thing this morning before Church, only to read the tragic news about our little one. I was just heartbroken...all that he had been through!!

I know that hindsight is 20/20 but I agree with you, KF, they really should have kept this chick..at least overnight. Thankfully, he was at least rescued, x-rayed and examined...but, internal injuries would not have shown up on x-rays. Heck, the stress and trauma of such a fall, encounter with humans, topped with searing heat combined could have been too much for such a young thing. For those of you who stuck with him, thank you...I know that must have been extremely difficult to watch. The pic of Dad trying to protect his baby was just heartwarming.

I'm far from being an expert or a professional (other than a professional pefa cam watcher), but maybe AZ Fish and game will learn something from this: From gravel depth and box location to urgent care for babies. Who knows. I know that other organizations have made changes based on repeated nest problems...maybe AZ will too...we can only hope!!

Thanks again to all of you who hung in there with this situation and this baby. I know we take the bad with the good and these things do happen, but it doesn't make it any easier to watch, grasp, and accept...

:sorrow: little guy..you sure did have a bunch of people cheering you on!!

Thanks, Sky, for your comments - I looked for you here all day...
It was just so sad...and (I think) my brain didn't want to accept what I was seeing.

sky - yes - GSB is an example of that
After the 4 juvies fell they put up a bar
(no, not one that serves drinks!)
2 of the juvies fell thru a gap between the box and outer perch

A MALE?!
AZ had told us after the chick was taken before she was female!
Rocky was so beautiful. :egg10:

Others besides me have posted AZ needs to put the box on the roof or in a place where chick doesnt have a sheer drop off

:sorrow:
