He brought food...but, she wasn't ready to feed

"maybe if I ignore her, she'll go away.."

I don't think he wanted to leave, but she persisted until he got up..gotta love these dads who want to be with their babies.

:hatchegg: :hatchegg: :hatchegg: 3 dry, chicks and a pip noted before dark. I did not realize you all didn't know of the 3rd one and when I went back to the DVR to verify, it was too late. And Maltese seems to be "working the pip" @ intervals!! So, maybe 4 by daylight ...

I'm concerned with the feeds or lack of I've witnessed here today. I don't know if there is a hunting problem? I have witnessed 2 feeds just now on the DVR that are almost 4 hours apart. The 1st one Maltese clearly fed herself (her back was to me and she must have been very hungry or she would not have eaten it) possibly all but 1-2 bites to the chicks. The second feed, she did feed them (back to us), however it was short. Each feed (?) left the chicks not in a food coma, but with those still standing having their beaks open waiting for more, although she had left. When she took a prolonged break in between feeds with Peace on duty, every time he moved almost, beaks were opening. He did not have any food with him to offer. No real change in the pipped egg, although I've caught both parents staring into the opening. :teehee: Okay, the news is on and I missed (forgot) the derby while looking into this. :egg10: / :egg7: There's a great horse grin for you!! :egg11:

If there is a food issue, it just got worse as I think the last egg hatched.

Peace brought prey to the ledge, but Maltese wouldn't budge. The 4th egg hatched at 8:49pm. She licked it a few times until it fell completely out of the shell. Then she was more interested in eating the shell than pulling the wet hatchling underneath her. But she got it eventually. Maybe now she'll concentrate on feeding everyone!

Yeah, I was watching all of that too MIsue. Moms hate to be interrupted during hatching, for sure. Hoping all goes well here with lots of food. I imagine the weather hasn't helped if it's as messed up as it has been here.

It seemed to be overcast all day, so I am hoping it was weather related and/or impending hatch. I don't recall them ever having feeding issues here, but it was noticeable to me today, especially with the kids reactions. I usually don't worry about feeds too much as they always seem to pull it off. I think the only time I ever saw starvation of chicks was @ Hellgate last year with the osprey who had zero chance of catching fish in the constantly flooded, muddy, waters there.

Sunday morning, I rolled back the four hours and saw two feedings so far this morning. One was at about 9:20am (Eastern time) for about 4 minutes, and another feeding about 10:30am for about 5 minutes.

Ljames, your pictures are much clearer than mine, so please keep posting them! Thanks!

Thanks, MISue!! And I see bright, blue, sunny skies this morning! Hopefully, yesterday was just a dud hunting day.
