and this is why I no longer watch Union
a falcon is a falcon. No good , no bad. they are falcons . I just do not understand this bad mouthing of one over the other. back , 10 years ago, things were much different. there just were not the challenges, as falcons were still recovering. we only watched a certain few, so did not really know that much. Pa At deMOrtel obsessed over his eggs.
At my sites, I have had to learn to go with the flow. We had a turn over of one o f my favorite falcons at WEber this year. His replacement, I watched from an egg. watched carefully from the ground, but I will never give him a free pass. He has to go on his own merits . We have our challenges, and each falcon that comes to our nests has its own quirks. I have had my favorites, but when you monitor nests, you have to put that aside and do what is best for the nest.
This male here, is a good one in my book. We do not see what goes on beyond the nest here. He kept those eggs going. That was his job.
I also want to add, that at a good number of sites, the female does most of feeds and brooding of chicks, while they are younger. the male steps up in feeding as they get in older. Notice I am saying , at a good number of sites. As the kids get older , a lot of females do more hunting as they can being in bigger prey. So we know not of this males background., s far as who he has been nesting with, He has had 3 females this year. a lot to take in. He is not banded We cannot make assumptions. Nor should we.
I could go on and on from things at my sites, but suffice to say, just because a falcon comes from so called good genes , does not make it a great.
