Grand Forks Marv returned to the water tower a few days ago & now a female has arrived

Female peregrine falcon returns to mating site in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS -- Pretty much right on schedule, there’s a female peregrine falcon back in Grand Forks vying for the affections of Marv, the male peregrine who returned to his love nest atop the University of North Dakota water tower last week.

Tim Driscoll, the Grand Forks raptor expert and licensed bander who follows the annual comings and goings of the local peregrines closer than anyone, said he got a call Thursday morning from a UND employee who’d seen a smaller falcon fly into the nest box, followed by a larger bird that landed on the tower railing.

Female peregrines are larger than their male counterparts.

“I said, ‘I’m on my way,’” Driscoll said.

Peregrine pairs don’t migrate together but return to the same mating sites each spring.

Driscoll said it’s too soon to say for sure whether the female is Terminator, the matriarch of the local peregrine clan since 2008 when falcons nested in Grand Forks for the first time. But he doesn’t think it’s Bristol, the female who last year flew into town before Terminator, fueling speculation of a love triangle in the making.

That possibility ended a few days later when Terminator returned. Within two days, Bristol was confirmed in downtown Winnipeg, where she hatched in 2015.

Adele Glowing for a Reason
First egg March 29th 2017 :newegg:

Adele (sideway Y black/sideway 9 green) and Frank (30 black/AN green) have been visiting the nest regularly throughout the winter, usually at different times but occasionally together. Yesterday Frank delivered a meaty looking chunk to the nest (an infrequent behavior without any babies present). Today we have our 1st egg of the season.

Atlanta UPDATE
Posted on cam site :girlsad3:
GeorgiaWildlife
Unfortunately, as in 2016, falcons aren't nesting on the balconies this year. ...
We have taken down the cam & will hope for reports of peregrines in the area, plus ...
... for these ATL falcons to return to their formerly favored nest sites in 2018.

I think there is something amiss at Seattle. I checked yesterday quite a few times and there has been no one sitting on the eggs. This morning I could see even in the dim light...no one on the eggs. 6:30am. PT I will keep checking and hope someone comes to cover them.

Thanks, KF....

Carolyn, I've been checking Seattle on/off all day since you mentioned them. I agree, definitely something going on but here's what strange...nobody has been there when I've checked...I guess I should put my recorder on the cam to see if anybody at least pops in..

Are they working on the building? Human intruders on the ledge?

The cam times out after a while...maybe 10 minutes. It's not going to be easy, I will watch when I can.

RE: Seattle

I just emailed a Crystal Gamon, property manager at 1201 Third Avenue..She'll probably think I'm crazy and/or the falcons will now appear..I'm fine with either one.

Carolyn, I know we haven't been glued to the cam, but it makes no sense for BOTH birds to disappear...heck, with all the stuff that had been going on at Union, we would periodically see Dad...

I agree and I mentioned that in my email. I posted a video of the panning in my previous post.
