UC Davis...this was hatch #4 yesterday

I was too late opening the cam this morning and missed breakfast

SGB reported that the 5th egg did hatch, but that the chick was tiny. I saw her feeding a long feeding. Her back was to the cam so I don't know who was fed.

Thanks Catwoman...sorry I'm late posting..

I watched the entire feed. Baby must have hatched during the night as it spent about the first 1/2 of the feed down in front. It eventually got up but received NO bites. There were 3 very feisty and hungry chicks in the front that dominated the feed. #4 finally got its good share of bites when 2 of the 3 fell over and it was able to move closer to the front...which is good because I thought it was about ready to give up. It stayed toward the front until the end of the feed. Baby got knocked over at the very end, and was so exhausted, it just stayed there...I have tons more pics..

The one I'm calling #4 for this feed is the chick next to the baby in the second row. It eventually got some good bites..

The feed ended shortly after this pic...and I left the cam..The baby looked like it was in the process of turning over after this pic..

Feed had already started..and I don't have time to watch the entire thing. Baby is in the back, but fell down right after this pic. I'm "assuming" #4 is in front of Mom...I sure do hope baby is getting some food sometime throughout the day.

Sorry these are so hard to see. I had to zoom it (which of course you can't take picture in) to see if baby got fed. The feed took place from the back, which is where baby is. She's a good mom, she spent a lot of time with him. For being so tiny, he was feisty. He held up til the end of the feed, just like his siblings. Like I said, it was kind of hard making sure he got fed but he received a half dozen bites that I saw go into his mouth. :loveshow:

The picture at the top shows mom giving the baby a bite. He had such a large crop that he kept tipping over! :7val:

Everybody had enough to eat, full crops. I did notice a lot of redness under baby's left wing. Could have just been from the prey.

Little baby is turned around. He should start seeing in one to two days. Mom always seems to feed with the little one in front of her. :flirty:

I think I have missed breakfast. Been watching for a while now and Mom is just shielding the babies from the sun and blocking my view....LOL. That will teach me to be late...

She's got the little baby sort of out of the sun, but now she's trying to get as many of the others covered as possible. All but the baby are looking kind of red.

I don't know but I think somebody ought to put a roof on the nestbox. :girlsad3:
