How adorable! priceless is soooo right! What a beautiful video. Our little Hopie playing so sweetly with the little boy cub. I loved her squawk when Lily tried to take him, Hope was having none of it! And how gently she took him back and cuddled him and licked him. She is a beautiful creature, so tender with him, and enjoying it. Thanks so much for the video, such a special look into the behaviors of these awesome creatures :girlluv:

Awww...Hope just loves her little brother & sister! I imagine the 3 of them will have a great time playing when they leave the den a little later. Maybe the researchers can catch some of it on video! :flirty:

Let’s Name those Cubs!

From Dr. R and Sue's 2/16 update:
Team Bear has kindly offered to run a ‘name the cubs’ contest. The complete rules for the contest are at Contest Rules. But, in short, here’s their plan.

Everyone email names to ** cubnamingcontest@gmail.com
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
You need JavaScript enabled to view it between 11:00 AM EST Thursday (2/17) and 11:00 AM EST Saturday (2/19).
Each person submits two names; one for the female and one for the male.
Please include your own name and complete mailing address with your submission.
Only one submission per person.
At the end of the 48 hour period, Team Bear will tally the entries and make a ‘Short List’ of the 3 most popular female names and the 3 most popular male names. They will send those 6 names to us for approval. If we have to remove a name like Stinky or Terror, the next most popular name will be inserted until the ‘Short List’ is approved. (We know you wouldn’t name Hope’s sister and brother those names.)

On Sunday (2/20) at 11:00 AM EST, Team Bear will draw a fan name from the emails submitted. The winner then has 24 hours to select two names from the list, one for the male cub and one for the female cub. The winner gets a certificate of honor and a copy of “Lily & Hope – the Light of the Northwoods” by Olatz Azcona Munarriz.

On Monday (2/21) at 8 PM EST, Team Bear will announce the winning cub names. We’re anxious to see the names you come up with! This will begin a new era in the saga of Lily, Hope, and the cubs.

SISTER ACT
This video was posted on the "Lily" page. Part of it is the same at the one Pat posted, but this is mostly Hope playing with her sister. The other videos were of Hope playing with her brother.

CUBS DEVELOP
By the end of February, cubs are 4 to 6 weeks old and usually weigh 2-3 pounds. They have dense fur almost an inch long. They can thermo-regulate to some extent, but they still cry for help staying warm and fed. They can crawl, but they can't walk. Their eyes are opening or fully open.
On warmer days, with temperatures in the 20's, the cubs often sleep partially exposed on their mother's back. Mother loses .36 to .61 pounds a day converting fat, water, and other body stores to milk and energy. She may eat snow around the den entrance.
In March, the cubs' fur grows to over an inch. Temperatures are rising. The cubs are walking in the den on warmer days. Melting snow drips on the cubs or soaks the bedding. Mothers lick the cubs . By early April, most cubs weigh 3-10 pounds, depending upon the mothers' weight and how many littermates competed for her milk. The denning period is over or almost over.

Cub Naming Celebration by

In Chinese culture, it is a tradition to name newborn babies in a One-Month Naming Celebration. . The Chinese believe that a good name will determine the future of the child. Proud parents introduce their latest addition to friends and relatives by holding a red egg and ginger party. Traditionally, the baby's name is also announced at this time. As today is the one month birthday of our newborn cubs, we will also celebrate their names with HOPE for a healthy and wonderful life for their future. Today, February 21, 2011, it is hereby proclaimed the names of Lily's cubs will be:

The winner that has had the honor of naming the cubs has asked to remain anonymous and we will honor her request. She sent the following description, the insightful thoughts given to her by her seven year old grandson, for her choices. "Faith is the faith that the learning and love of the bears will go on and on and since you can't name a boy Love, Jason is the next best thing because he shows love in all he does."
