In case you missed it, I just had to add a copy of Kim's cute video here. It's a hoot to see the antics of the chicks during dinner on May 19!

Here's a video with a little tug of war and then a chick stealing the food and running away with it! I see they're eating without mom's help, or at least one of them is.

I thought it was CJ too but saw the band! When she's that far away from the camera she really looks a lot smaller!

Someone was just feeding them but it didn't last very long!

I see another meal brought in and mostly eaten. Red Girl I think. They literally run across the nest box now. Have to check out the feet before voting.

When I tuned in this morning the chicks were all sacked out at various places up there. And Kim, I could watch that video of the tug of war over and over. I'm not sure about the genders at the moment, but two girls for sure.

Kim said yesterday that it seems that anytime CJ is feeding the chicks, Red Girl shows up shortly thereafter and kicks him out.

She probably thinks that CJ's time is better spent foraging. He's hammering the mourning doves this morning -- at least two so far, plus a warbler-sized songbird that can't have lasted long. He probably should have just bolted it himself and stayed out there hunting.

Yeah, I think females call ths shots. I think I've read somewhere that at some point males are almost frightened of their female offspring. Frightened might not be the right word. Guess you're getting sick of the rain in Delaware, too.

I have a book about golden eagles in Scotland. It has a picture of a very frazzled looking mom who had chosen a perch where she could watch over the eaglets without having to be in direct contact with them.

I may have missed it because I don't always get a chance to check in here, but could someone tell me, please, when the banding is going to take place for the Wilmington chicks? Thanks!

Don't think I've seen any info about banding yet, Carol. Checked in on the chicks a bit ago, and there's a pretty good sized hunk of wing up there that hadn't been there earlier. Maybe a Modo or Pigeon?

:sunmad: I can't believe it's still raining here - the weather's been absolutely miserable all week long. Thank goodness the nest box is covered so the chicks are soaking wet.

I managed to catch the start of a mid-afternoon feeding earlier, but the chicks didn't stay in sight for long. They almost disappeared into the upper corner where the food was being served.

Red Girl just stopped by for a minute to check on the leftovers. Since there's not much left, I think she flew off to get more food.

OMG! Red Girl returned with more food, and the chicks were so excited that they gathered around and almost pushed her over! If she hadn't spread her wings out, I think she would have ended up flat on her back.

Well, one chick just grabbed a hunk of food and took it off to the corner. (This was after several tugs of war with Red Girl over food. I think pretty soon Red Girl will start doing flyovers to drop food and make a quick exit.)

Whew, CJ just came to the rescue with another food drop. These chicks are voracious!
