Just checking the forum here. What an adorable picture of Red Girl's and CJ's chicks. Glad they were able to be banded safely. Looked at the web cam a bit ago, and saw no chicks in the box. Thank heavens that our LO in Harrisburg hadn't fledged as of last night, and he hasn't yet this morning. We had to hunker down inside the Carson Building when that horrific storm hit last night. Not sure what time the power came back on here. Am thankful this computer wasn't fried.

Great news here today! What an adorable picture of Red Girl's and CJ's family!! (Most of the family that is.) I am glad that the banding worked out afterall. Thanks for those who gave up their own time to do it and thanks for sharing that picture.

Great photos opp of the chicks.

well, at least the females usually fledge last so the males will be in the air and hopefully doing well.

I say usually becasue there is always one that proves everyone wrong.
Thanks to all who were involved

For those of you who don't have the time to check the Harrisburg topic, our little Harrisburg boy fledged successfully this morning, ended up landing ABOVE the nest ledge, & is now back on the nest ledge. The process of juvies returning to the ledge normally takes days! It only took him a couple of hours!

When did he hatch? I ask because we're trying to judge when to ask people to start being alert for fledglings around their buildings in Wilmington. (So we would figure out how many days the Harrisburg dude took between hatching and flying, and add that to April 26-28. Based on year 2003 data in Wilmington, I put youngsters flying this year in the second week in June, but everything is moving so fast it may be sooner.

He hatched on 4/20, but fledged earlier than expected. Fledge Watch was scheduled to begin on 3/31, but the way he was acting, people "in the know" decided he would go early, so they asked people to start the watch early. I believe I've heard the average is 40 days from hatch. The boys usually go before the girls. I think your calculation is correct.

I came here a few minutes ago to post the same pic, SGB, then saw Greg's post & forgot about it. Anyway, I was going to say that Red Girl apparently has a Red Girl! :flirty: I'm guessing that the one with its leg up & the red band is a girl judging by size.

Thanks Nancy. If one of these males is as precocious as the Harrisburg guy, he could fly a week from now.

Isn't this the best so far. Such success! Makes up for the pain we feel at times. May they all fly safe.

White, yellow and red are the males and green is the female. Sorry, it didn't even cross my mind to ask Craig to use red on the female!

Nancy, you can see the partition behind the birds in the picture although it isn't really obvious.

Ethel, the fifth chick was on the other side of the partition! We waited for at least 30 mins for him to get in the box but he never did.

Thanks, Kim! I know of several nests who have this & it certainly makes banding safer for the chicks! So the chick whose sex is unknown is the one who wouldn't come into the box?

Kim, does this mean that the 5th chick was not banded, or just didn't get tape? Thanks!

Right, the one who didn't come inside the box did not get banded so the sex is unknown. I was thinking it was Yellow Foot because I didn't remember seeing any with brighter feet when he was banding them but it was kind of dark. I don't think it was YF though.

Thanks, Kim! I imagine the banding went fairly quickly once the chicks were collected and without having to do a teaching experience at the same time like they do in Harrisburg.

Since they were collected after dark, did that keep CJ and Red Girl more calm than they might have been in the daytime?

Those are the cutest little darlings. Thanks for the picture. Sounds like a night banding is the way to go if the parents didn't get upset. :suncon:

I was thinking the same thing about the night banding!

Here's another short video. This is the chick getting the red tape.
