I was delighted to recently find this forum. I grew up just outside Wilmington and am thrilled to know there are falcons in the city. I was disappointed to learn that the two girls were not returned to the nest. As a former biologist in the Endangered Species Program I understand the need to 'rescue' and remove young in order to give them a better chance of survival. That being said, though, there is no compelling reason to remove young who are being properly taken care of by their parents. Even in nature, mom always knows best. Thanks to all of you who watch over these falcons. I wish I could be there to see them.

(edited because spelling counts.)

I don't want to mislead anyone; I'm no expert. I worked in the ESA program as a general biologist, but my background is botany, not ornithology. Still, you pick up 'stuff' along the way. I may be in the area in mid-July, will the falcons still be around? I'd love to see them if I have a chance.

Hi frankiemac. I welcomed you over on the Harrisburg thread, so here is my second welcome. :hithere: Thanks for your valuable input about the girls. Picking up "stuff" along the way by reading, asking questions, and lots of hours of just observing is how I've learned about falcons, but I have a long way to go to catch up to some other members here at BCAW.

"edited because spelling counts" :hahah Uh oh, then I'm in trouble.

The young birds here tend to disperse by the end of July. Whether or not they're still around the parents should be; I see one or both most weeks of the year.

Here is some information from the hack site along with a photo of GG. I can't believe they still have her in a hack box and won't release her until 6/23! And I'm assuming they're talking about NB to be released l the 26th!

"The 1st set of PEFA are scheduled to be released on June 23rd
(Wednesday). This group consists of 10 birds - 9 from VA, 1 from DE
("Green Girl", case # 814)

The 2nd group of PEFA are scheduled to go out June 26 (Sunday). These
are 6 birds from NJ & 1 from DE.

The 3rd group of PEFA are currently in the flight barn getting old
enough to be put out on the Grandview cliff. These birds are 3 from the
Betsy Ross Bridge plus 1 from Jersey City (Erica, that's your case #500).

Friday (June 17) we will be doing pre-release exams, putting on id
colors (if we're allowed), taking pictures of the birds and setting up
Mega Perch and outfitting the blind. I'm estimating that we'll be at
Grandview around 1:30 pm. After we've finished up, we'll be observing
the rest of the afternoon from North Overlook to see if the activity has
attracted the attention of any adults.

Gary Hartley has volunteered to take pictures during release day(s).
It'll be great to have his photos again this year!

Pictures of the 4 PEFA in the flight barn (taken today) and of Green
Girl on the day she was put in the 1st hack box (6/9/11) are attached.
More pictures will follow after tomorrow. I will also send along a full
accounting of the bands, etc after tomorrow - I'm still waiting to hear
if we're going to be allowed to continue using our double band system.
Libby's questions to Patuxant's banding lab haven't been responded to
yet. If we're not able, we're going to have to come up with something
else as effective. Thanks to the double color band system we were able
to ID the adult that showed up at the Grandview site earlier this year
as the 2009 female from the VA James River Reserve Fleet ( black/
bright greent, Z/29, USFWS # 1807-02794). The alpha numeric code could
not be read from North Overlook.

RE: sightings of peregrines around NRG bridge. Dave Pollard (top notch
birder, father of our intern Rebecca Pollard) NPS's Mark Graham,
photographer Rachel Davis and a bridge catwalk guide went out on the
catwalk on 6/10/2011. One adult male was seen and photographed, the
bands were later identified as a male from our 2008 hack, originally
from the Berkley Bridge in VA. Left band X/28 visible in the photo.
Right color band (tape) was off the USFWS band, but the USFWS band # was
not able to be read. I am forwarding the e-mail Dave sent me to you,
Libby and Shawn. It'll be in your e-mail right after this one."

OMG! JUNE 23RD? AND THEN THE 26TH? THAT'S CRAZY! THOSE BIRDS CAN'T POSSIBLY BE ABLE TO PRACTICE MUCH OF ANYTHING IN THOSE HACK BOXES AND THE BOYS HAVE BEEN FLYING, SO I THINK THEY ARE HOLDING THOSE GIRLS WAY TOO LONG!! MY GOSH, THEY WON'T KNOW HOW TO ACT WHEN LEFT OUT THE BOX! THIS REALLY SADDENS AND ANGERS ME THINKING ABOUT THEM IN THOSE BOXES AND HOW THEY COULD BE FLYING FREE WITH RG AND CJ AND THEIR BROTHERS! :suntalk:

Thanks for posting the link to that article, Reenie...I almost felt like it was written for "us" as we were so opposed to the hacking of the girls!!

...and thanks for posting all that info, Kim...I can't believe the girls aren't together...and that they're waiting so long for release...

On a positive note...I'm happy to read that the bird that returned was id'd as a 2009 female from James River...I'll need to go back and see if it was one of the kids we watched...that's exciting!!!

Let me know if you need help with the pics..sorry, that I have parameters set on the pics...anything larger than the current dimensions, really messes up the forum...

The image width is 500 and the height is 750. That should work shouldn't it?

I've discovered that if you resize in photo bucket, for whatever reason, the forum sometimes doesn't recognize that its been resized...I haven't figured out why, so I've stopped resizing in PB...
